Excellent Idea to see if it can just be reamed to 30-06 AI. You would be right in the same ball park as the 300 Win Mag without doing the bolt face work and total re-chambering.

ORIGINAL: cma3366a To do that you would have to open the bolt face, and get a new mag box $$. You would probably be better off having it reamed to AI specs as that would clean up any small problems. Define smoking good deal, if its not $250 or under, its not a smoking good deal. |

I agree with all of the above statements.

Rebarrel it and have it chambered for the same cartridge. Nothing at all wrong with the .30-06. I bought my first rifle chambered for the .30-06 a couple of years ago (a pre-'64 model 70) and absolutely love this cartridge. Before that, I'd been hunting and shooting with mostly magnums since the late 70's. I now tend to think magnums are overrated, though I still own a couple.

RE: 30-06 to 300 win mag rechamber?
If you rechamber to .300 Win Mag, you will need to open the bolt face, as was already mentioned. I thought about doing a similar thing with an '06 - convert to .375 H&H. My gunsmith that opening up the bolt face wasn't a problem, but he recommended installing a Sako-style extractor.
As far as the magazine box goes, I don't think you will need to do anything to it. A full length .375 H&H round fit into the magazine on my Remington 700 (.30-06) as it was. Nothing needed to be changed there. |
RE: 30-06 to 300 win mag rechamber?
Normally, the 30/06 barrels on Remingtons are 22" long. I would really prefer a 24 or 26 inch on the .300 Winchester. I'd also wonder what condition the bore is in if the chamber is pitted.
I currently have a 30 gallon drum full of brand new Remington 700 30/06 barrels. These are take-off barrels fromnew guns where I used the action for a custom rifle. If you want one of these, send me a PM. Three times out of four, one of these barrels will screw on a given action and headspace OK with no tweaking. Also, if you do decide to rechamber to a belted magnum: in addition to opening up the bolt face and installing the Sako extractor, it usuallywon't feed quite right without a magnumfollower. |
