SHOOTING QUESTION

i have been shooting a 30-06 now i have a flinching problem. what
can i do to help this problem? i am thinking about switching to a
243 . do you think switching calibers will help my flinching? how well will a
243 work on deer. what is the effective range of a 243 with a 100 grain
bullit? thank you for your help.

RE: SHOOTING QUESTION

I have a .243 and my dad used to shoot a .243. very good guns. i use 80 grains and shoot 100 yards just fine so i don't see why 100 grain would be any different. now with the flinching problem, i flinch a little too. but there is barely any recoil on the .243. i guess it just depends on you.

That deer was shot under 100 yards with a .300 WSM. He may claim it was shot with a .243 but it in fact wasn't.

i have another question i forgot to ask. if i am shooting a remington
700 sps in a 270 with a r-3 recoil pad that reduses felt recoil by 50%.
would this be soft enough recoil for some one who has a flinching
problem to handle? thank you.

Ok you know what? We don't need that in every thread...thanks. You can go ahead and give advice without reposting that in every .243 thread taht comes along.

It all depends on you. I can't really tell you what your threshold for recoil is. I think the best thing for you to do would be to borrow some different caliber guns and see what you're comfortable with.

By actually hunting with the .243 for 15 years with many different styles and bullet weights, that deer was not shot with a .243, it was shot under 100 yards with a very fast magnum, probably a 7mm mag or .300 mag.

sorry bud but a 243 could easily cause this type of damage on the exit side. I don't know what you have been looking at but this is not abnormal for any round if it hits bone. I've seen 30-30s do alot more damage than this.

I'm sure you have in your 5 years of hunting and shooting. But the supposed shot was at 200 yards. And yes I have seen plenty of rounds hit the bone and do less damage than that, and were we talking about the 30-30? no, the 30-30 shoots a heavier bullet, and yes I have seen a 30-30 do similar damage as well.

Guys, guys keep it to the flinch problem. They make some incredible products now that fit over the stock and absorb tons of felt recoil I believe limbsaver makes one along with a multitude of other companies might want to give one a try before switching guns especially if its one you like

Want to bet ?
I only own one high powered deer rifle, a .243., and I am sorry my 9 year old son (at the time) can shoot better than you, but he nailed that deer at 195+ yds.
This was last year, his first big game hunt. Your not only calling me a liar but my son as well. His uncle didnt believe he made that shot, and it hurtmy boysfeeling pretty bad, and pissed me off. Like your doing.
I have video of him making a 150 yd shot on a javeline this same weekend, dont have the video of this deer because we had to stalk about 300yds to within the 200 yd range he shot it at.

RE: SHOOTING QUESTION

Flinching is a shooting problem. Recoil may exaggerate the problem, but the problem will still exist.

Rather than buy a new deer rifle, I would recommend buying a 22 LR, that closely resembles the high power you are shooting. Buy a whole bunch of ammo, and a good book on how to shoot. Then practice, practice, practice. Every now and then pick up your high power and let one fly, then go back to your 22. Tom.

That always works, great suggestion HEAD, the .22 LR allows the person to practice proper mechanics, and then they can carry it over to the high power rifle.

This is Matt(little zrexpilot) I am 10 years old and I was 9 years old when I shot that deer. It was my first deer and I shot it with a 243 and we counted 195 yards. My dads not a liar.

Alright, I believe you, after all your the actual person who shot it.

RE: SHOOTING QUESTION

I found that my previous flinching was more from the noise, not the kick. First of all, make sure you have GOOD earplugs. With proper trigger SQUEEZE the shot should be a "suprise" to you, so the noise may make you jerk when you anticipate the shot.

This might be common sense, but I'm shocked at how many people go to the range without earplugs. I forget 'em one day and flinched the whole time!! Of course, you won't need them for the woods...

RE: SHOOTING QUESTION

The only problem I see with practicing with the .22 is that it does not punish improper technique. Therefore, any flaws with positioning will go unnoticed until you go back to the big gun.

Try this, get a snap cap that can be cycled through. Have someone help you by placing the snap cap in between the real rounds without you knowing where it is. Keep doing this until you don't flinch at all when you pull the trigger onthe "dummy" round.

If that's not possible for you, just practice, practice, practice. You'll get used to the noise and recoil. After you've fired enough rounds without trying to anticipate the shot, you'll stop flinching.

RE: SHOOTING QUESTION

Listen to this, I had a guy tell me once that my .300 Win Mag was useless for hunting because I had to wear ear muffs to shoot it at the range, he thought it was too loud to hunt with, and it doesn't have a Muzzle Break or anything like that, what an idiot.
