Shooting Offhand?

Just curious, the few times I've been to the range the majority of shooting has been from a bench with stands/bags.

How often do you practice shooting Offhand (Standing Position), this seems like a better way to really increase real life accuracy for the field? What other positions do you practice?

Not nearly enough do I practice Offhand shooting...But i get better at it closer to hunting season....Offhand(last resort) Shooting sticks and prone or shooting from the sit . I use a 22 strictly for any position other than from the bench.

I don't practice offhand as much as maybe i should, but i really don't take many off hand shots either. my 1st instinct is dropping to a knee or usually I'm standing near a tree. I also use shooting sticks many times.

you dont necessarily need to practice off-hand, as long as you never use that position. though people dont usually pratice enough from field positions in general

300-400 rounds with a .22 every trip to the range at a 20 oz coke bottle at 100 yards. When I start getting 30 hits in a row, I practice with a centerfire rifle. I also shoot about 100 prone with the .22 at a soda can at the same distance. My least favorite position to shoot from is kneeling or sitting, which I don't practice nearly enough. Not coincidently, I shoot high scores from the prone and standing positions but shoot poorly from the sitting position in high power rifle matches. Sitting position is the only thing keeping me from moving from sharpshooter to expert classification.<img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle>

I find myself using the kneeling position a lot. It feels pretty stable with my elbow on my knee. I also use my rifle sling to help stabilize my hold. I stick my left (non-firing) arm through the sling past the elbow then take a turn around the wrist before grabbing the forestock. If the sling is too short you cannot comfortably shoulder the rifle, if its too long then it doesn't provide any support.

That probably isn't the greatest description, maybe someone else can chime in with a better one. I know I'm not the only guy who does this.

I like to shoot from a rest but its not always possible ,so I try shooting offhand as much as I can,Just to keep in practice .I found a shooting stick I made helps quite a bit as long as I have a standing target.

I practice in the offhand with a vertical support (tree trunk), but only rarily w/o any rest at all. Why?

First, off-hand shots (w/o support) should be avoided whenever possible because it's the least supported and accurate method. The only off-hand shot I'd take would be if the range were short &lt;50 yards and i had no other choice. The thing is, if you are in an area that is so open you can't find anything to use as a rest, chances are you're either going to be spotted and spook the game, or you'll have plenty of time to take a knee.

I think one should practice all types of shooting positions, but should concentrate on practicing for shooting scenarios faithful to those you'll likely encounter in your hunting environment. I hunt deer in medium to dense timber, which always provides something to prop the gun on in a pinch.
