RE: Which Barrel Maker for My New Rifle Project?
ORIGINAL: bigcountry Yea, I gota problem. You won't answer the question. Other than that, bored sitting in a hotel in Ca. But thanks for asking. In the interests of helping the guy out: I've owned a couple of custom guns that had douglas barrels, including a .308 scout rifle I used for work on a daily basis for about 7 months. I shot it exstensively. It had a heavy fluted Douglas barrel. All the guns I've used with Douglas barrels were extremely accurate. Lija barrels have a superb reputation and considering the cost are probably one of the better deals. If you look around at numerous sniper rifle builds and the top end guns many of them have Shilen barrels which is why it would probably be my first choice. |
RE: Which Barrel Maker for My New Rifle Project?
Any of the manufacturers you listed are top quality. I use Douglas barrels and have had tremendous results. Many of the top benchresters shoot Shilen. You won't go wrong with anything from Lilja, Krieger, Douglas, Shilen,or Hart. I would sugest Douglas Premium Air Gauged barrels from personal experience. Also, Be prepared for the fact that Delivery time for all of these manufacturers are suspect. You'll get your barrels whenever they get around to it.[8D]

Douglas would be my choice. I have had several barrel from them. All shot very well. All the makers you listed make good barrel. Few will out shoot the stock Remington barrel.

RE: Which Barrel Maker for My New Rifle Project?
Thanks, tbuck. I called Bartlein Barrels today. They are pretty busy too, but said he could probably get me a barrel by the end of the year. They want $285 for a stainless cut-rifled barrel, so they are a little faster and cheaper than Krieger.
I still haven't decided on a particular barrel manufacturer, but I have pretty much decided on a caliber. I am looking long and hard at the .280 Improved. I would like to have a lightweight rifle for sheep/mountain goat hunting (something I've never done, but plan to change), and this seems about ideal for my needs. Factory brass (Nosler) that doesn't require fire-forming is also pretty nice. The only question that remains, for me anyway, is manufacturing technique. To save time, I plan to have my gunsmith flute the barrel. I have read that cut-rifled barrels take to "after-the-fact" fluting better than button-rifled barrels, because there is less stress put into the barrel during the rifling process. If this is true, I will probably go with a Bartlein, since their delivery time is better than Kreiger (both of these barrelmakers use the single point cut-rifling method). If it turns out that the information I have is incorrect, or that the particular rifling process doesn't matter as it pertains to "after-the-fact" fluting, I will probably choose the Lilja "in-stock" barrel. Any comments? |
RE: Which Barrel Maker for My New Rifle Project?
Lucked out big time tonight!!!
I went to talk with my gunsmith. After we talked for a while, he pawed around his inventory and came across new Hart stainless 7mm barrel that another customer had fit to a Remingtion 700, but never shot. Evidently, the customer had several barrels, in several calibers, fit to the same reciever for a switch-barrel rifle. The 7mm barrel was chambered in .280 Improved and already fluted. It's exactly what I was looking for, and I couldn't beat the price - $200! He's going to take my new 700 ADL, blueprint the action, install & rechamber the barrel (has to cut it back a bit), and give it a trigger job. He said that he should be finished in about two weeks, maybe three. Time to start looking for brass! :D |
