Sighting in
I just got a new gun and I need to sight it in. It's a .243 and I probably need to sight the gun in at 100 yds or 150 yds. Any suggestions?

RE: Sighting in
I would sight it in 3 inches high at 100 yds. This is pretty much a standardwith a flat shooting gun like the .243 and should put you at zero somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 yds. If you are shooting factory loads most bullet manufacturers put the ballistic chart on the box these days, so you can refer to the chart for recommendations. Good Luck.

RE: Sighting in
Start at 25 yards. Pull the bolt, look down the barrel and make sure the rifle is securely held in place, sand bags, then move the scope onto the center of the target. Take a shot and see where you're at. Make fine adjustments then move up to 50. More fine adjustments then onto 100 etc..

I assume you are sighting in for a deer hunting roung. Check out this link for Remington factory ammo ballistics. Just coose 243 and the bullet weight / type you want and it will show you impact points at various ranges. http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/ballistics/ For example Remigntons 95 Grn Premier AccuTip will yield the following when sighted in at 200 Yds. 100 Yds....+0.5" 200 Yds.... 0" 250 Yds.... -2.7" 300 Yds.... -6.6" Any way, by checking out the verious bullet weights, sight in ranges and trajectories for the Rem factory ammo, you should be able to get a feel for how high you want to sight in at 100 Yds. firstshot ----------------------------- Make your first shot count! |

Thanks guys. This will be useful. I bought one of those gun holder/clamps that you can secure your gun in when sighting in or cleaning.

ORIGINAL: dway87 Thanks guys. This will be useful. I bought one of those gun holder/clamps that you can secure your gun in when sighting in or cleaning. I've got one of those "gun vises"...best money I ever spent! Saves a ton of time and cartridges when sighting in. 1) Using sandbags (not the vise) to fire3 shots at center of target. 2) Use a marker and make a 1" Dot centered between the shots so you can see it well from the bench. 3) Put gun in vise and recenter point of aim to exact center of target. 4) Without touching anything but the turrets, move the cross hairs to the center of the 1" dot you drew. 5) Shoot from bags again to varify, and fine tune if needed. (i.e. sight in 1" high or whatever") 6) You're done. firstshot --------------------------- Make your first shot count! |
