rebarrelling Rem. 700 action

I have a 700 in 7mm mag. Is it possible to rebarrel the gun to .270? If so what would it take and is it worth the effort/cash outlay?

Reason for caliber change is a bad shoulder so recoil is an issue plus the gun was free except for a SPS stock I added.

Thanks

I am not sure but I trhink the bolt face would need to be altered for a non Magnum cartridge. Check with Roskoe.;) You could also load the 7MM Mag down to much tamer loads. You can load it down to 270 levels or lower.

You could also get a Shooters Friend Recoil pad from Cabelas and make a pusssy cat out of the 7 Mag.

Why ruin a 7mmremmag by turning it into a 270win.:D Anything that a 270win can do,a 7mmremmag can do better.

You would have to replace the bolt. Your 7 mag has a .532" bolt face, you need a .473" bolt face. It is possible to get bolts from Remington if you know someone, but they're expensive.

He wants to lower the recoil level a few notches. I know what bad shoulders can do for a guy.[:@] I am glad that most of you don't need to find out.[:o]

Why not simply use the managed recoil loads and a sims limbsaver pad? That will cut the recoil down to 270win levels.

Muzzle Break, and GraCoil type recoil system will make that thing shoot like a .243. I have a 7mm Mag and also a .270 and there is not enough difference to justify the hassle of converting it. If you want a muzzle break check out Aquila Precision, out of Texas, he does awesome work.

Sell 7mm Mag buy what ever you want brand new. Breaks, low recoil loads, recoil pads, cheats that limit options and fit. Buy something that fits your needs and I doubt you will regret it. The loss you will take on selling your 7Mag and buying a new gun should be less than almost any fix that will be acceptable.

I would have to say avoid the brake at all costs. Unless you wanna be deafer than the stock on the gun you are shooting :D
