I have a Remington 700 in 30.06 and am still somewhat new to shooting. What is a realistic group when shooting at the range? Just curious. Thanks in advance.

Boy, your going to regret that question. There are so many one holed internet groups on this page, its silly.

Seriously, realistic group consistently over and over, you should be able to pull off 1.5-2MOA easily with most ammo, decent gun and decent scope. Thats around 3-4" groups at 200 yards off sand bags. You play around and try different ammo, you could lower that to 1MOA to 1.5MOA or 2-3" three shot group at 200 yards. And alot of guns out there can pull off subMOA. Not unusual with some load development or finding just the right ammo. But factory ammo changes, and so does groups.

MOA=Min of Angle. Its close to 1" at 100 yards. Its alot easier when explaining how good a gun shoots. If you say, you get 1MOA accuracy, you know the gun maybe capable of shooting 3.2" at 300 yards, or 1" at 100 yards.

If you get anything around 1 MOA then you're doing very well.

You have a quality firearm and I would guess quality optics. Just getting started again I would think a 3 shot group at 100 yards that you can cover with a quarter would be great for a new rifle with a new shooter behind the trigger.

Being new to shooting, etc I think you'd be doing better than avaerage if you can hold 2" at 100 off the bench. I have seen many experiencedshooters who can't do repeatable 1.5" groups. I agree with BC's comments on what you hear on internet sites should be taken withsome salt!!

With some time and finding the right load(s) this can be bettered if prepared to put forth the effort to achieve the results. When i started hunting I can't honestly say Iheld a 2" gorup with consistency, though I still filled my tags. It seemed for me for the first years the paper target was to much pressure, plus the little dot was a lot smaller then the lungs;)! Over time I developed my shooting skills and things are much different if i can't hold a repeatable 1"/100 group then its time to do some work.

find suitable loads and almost all factory rifles in 30-06 can shoot around the inch/100 yards mark. whether or not the shooter can do the job is another matter. 30-06 can be a handful in some rifles off the bench - especially if you are a beginner. trigger squeeze, sight picture, consistent cheek/stock meld can all go to hell in a hurry when muzzle blast and recoil start to effect you. practice your shooting technique with a gentler caliber before pressuring yourself with group sizes.
