3 1/2" Mag....Schedule the plastic surgery now?

Ok I just picked up a new Remington 870 SPS-T Super Magnum turkey gun to use for .....well turkeys:) and predator hunting.
I've never fired a 3.5" shell out of anything yet let alone a 7.5lb pump w/ a 23" barrel.....What the heck should I expect when I pull that trigger the first time to pattern it?
Bruised cheek or no big deal?

i have a remington 870 express mag turkey gun(3 inchers only..) though its only a 3 inch mag they still kick...and the gun is a tuny little guy...21 inch barrel and i dont think it weighs the 7.5 lbs they claim...id give it 6..maybe 7 tops...i thought it would beat me hard shootin 1 7/8oz of shot out of a 3 inch mag..i braced my self for the shot and thought the gun never went off!...it kicked but not how i expected...i liked it more than my mossberg 500 shooting the same loads but with a 28 inch barrel and the gun weighs atleast 9 lbs or so....you may be surprised...id brace for a mule just so i didnt seperate my shoulder or anything jsut to be safe..cant fly fish with a shoulder seperated! lol
good luck with the new toy!

If you think it is going to hurt, then its going to hurt. Mind over matter. Just hang onto it, pull it in tight and squeeze.

I shoot a Browning BPS 3.5" 12 gauge. For turkey I shoot Nitro Ammo 2&5/8 ounce loads. These loads are awesome but they do produce some heavy recoil. It's going to punish you but it will be manageable. Also, when you pull that trigger on a turkey you won't even remember the recoil.

I have and 870 3.5" and you will notice the kick. It is especially noticable when you are trying to pattern it on a bench. But once you get it patterned you don't have to go through that experience again. When shooting at a turkey ex. you won't even notice it. Have fun.

I have the Mossberg 835 and it does kick especially when shooting it off of sandbags to pattern it. I had six different loads to try when I patterened mine. The recoil is manageable. I have seen one of the 870s that had a much better pattern with the 3 inch shells than with the 3 1/2 inch shells. Just think of all the fun you will have trying all the different loads that are available. Good Luck and congradulations on the new gun.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quotequote:
This gun with a 3 1/2" load generates around 70lbs of recoil or roughly twice a 300 mag.

Ahhhhh there's a pleasant visual! :)

I kinda figured this would be a nasty little bugger......I'll take a few pre-shooting Ibuprofens and give it heck.
I'll probably shoot 3" #4's for fox, but I would like to see if I can find a load that patterns nice at 3.5" for turkey.
