Matt...I shot a buddies 3 1/2" 870 last spring, just to see how it kicked. It was something else! It really packs a whallop...

That said, it really patterned well at 50yds....That makes a little extra kick worth the punch.

You'll hardly notice.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I use a browning gold, 26&quot; barrel, semiauto, 3 1/2&quot; mag with an undertaker aftermarket choke. On top I've mounted a red dot scope. I also cammo tapped the whole gun. With all that I added to the gun it feet like it weighs 10 lbs.

When zeroing in, I went through boxes and boxes of ammo. First I had to find the right choke. Then I tried #4's, #5's and #6's of the various ammo brands out there.

What ever you do DON'T shoot this thing in the prone position! However, when sitting down I found that it is not bad at all. 50 rounds won't hurt all that much when the shotgun is against your shoulder the way it should be.

With that said....I was in my blind this year and a big old Tom walked out in front to my decoys. He was checking my blind out like a teen age boy checking out a porn site. I happen to shoulch in my chair in the blind so I couldn't raise the barrel because the end of the barrel it was hitting the side of the &quot;dog house&quot; blind that I use. So I put the stock over my shoulder (which meant the grip part of the stock was next to my lip) and I found the Toms neck. I fired. The gun with the .665 undertaker using winchester turkey loads in #6 took his head clean off. In the process though it gave me a bloodly lip. After weeks of waiting for a Tom though I really didn't feel the lip. I say you are a wimp if you can't shoot at least a box at a time.

Get several (after about a box it will be time for a new pallet)wooden pallets (free if you know where to look) and down load some turkey heads off of the internet(also for free). Prop up the pallet with a 2x4 and have some fun. Make sure you shoot at different ranges. From 10 yards to about 40 yards. I think I could kill a turkey at 50 if I had to but I knew my gun was deadly at 40 so I set my decoys up at 30. I got lucky, the tom I shot walked between the decoys and me so my guess was he was about 20 to 25 yards away. At 40 yards I was putting 6 to 14 pellets in the spine-head area. Sometimes I think those turkeys are smart (had several circle around my calls) and other times I think they are stupid, like the one I shot. Have fun and shoot a lot!!!!!

My 870 3 1/2 is not one i shoot for fun alot with 3 1/2 shells. it jars your brain a little . but when you pull the trigger on a tom you'll never feel it.
pattern it and put it up . thats what i did.

Man I am really dissappointed in most of you. Ive got a mossberg 835 Ulti-Maga dn I shoot 3 1/2 inchers out of it but I really dont think much of it. I shoot trap and skeet regularly with my remington and for those who arent welled versed in the number of shots fired in a day, you may very well shoot over 100 rounds out of your shotgun. Now even though Im shooting target loads, a day of shooting 100 sets of doubles(200 shots) I come home with a shoulder that has been ripped. Im not one who only shoots a hundred or so rounds out of a shotgun a year, I shoot several thousand rounds out of my Remington 11-96 each summer. I just shoot my shotguns the same no matter the model I am carrying or shooting. Just point and shoot and dont make a big hairy deal about the recoil.

Oh, about the fox hunting. Why not use a 3 1/2&quot; #4 buck instead of #4 shot? My buddy has had excellent luck with it and has harvested several. Patterns good out of his gun. Ive seen all sizes of buckshot in 3 1/2&quot; shells at even Wal Mart!!

You have fun and dont worry about it.

Excuse me, but are you saying that you shoot 100+ rounds of 3 1/2 in shells for trap/skeet shooting in a single session? Your post is a little vague. If you do you you must be a wealthy masochist :P! If you do, then I guess you're more of a man than I.

I've shot 3&quot; magnum slugs from an 870 Express 12 gauge and found them to be tolerable but not much fun to shoot. I can't see why anyone would use 3.5&quot; shells for range shooting, unless you're patterning a new turkey gun.

he clearly said hes shooting target loads...normal 2 3/4 light loads...but shooting 200 a day does tear you up...ive done 100-150 a good number of times and thats from the ages of 10 or so till 15...but i also find it fun to blast away with a fal...a fully auto 308...the gun is fairly light for what it is and does kick...if you dont think about it and enjoy yourself you should be okay with most recoil...you hand me a machine gun and a loaded mag it puts a smile on my face and the thrill makes the kick like nothing..so maybe im used to recoil...i tend to believe after all the shooting ive done i am getting used to it..shot my friends 300 weatherby mag out of a m70 featherweight shot about 5 rounds for him...he loads and loaded them to the max...kicked pretty good but im okay...its all about how you think i believe..yo ugo out shaking just thinking about the shot your going to get wacked hard...you stand up to it sure it might hurt but nothing terrible...
