Recoil: 7-08 vs. 25-06?

RE: Recoil: 7-08 vs. 25-06?
The real world the 7-08 is pretty pleasant to shoot. I've shot praire dogs all day with it and you don't get sore or flinchy. I would say it is compareable to a 12 gauge. The 06 will bite you a little. Not bad but a hundred rounds at dogs will leave you flinching with a sore shoulder. The 7-08 is a shorter case, a necked down 308 as apposed to a necked down 30-06. A lot less powder and a lot less recoil. I have both and I wouldn't reccommmend the 25-06 for all day varmiting, however, you can't beat it for antelope and deer. It works on coyote and fox but will put a pretty good hole in them.

I own both calibers and shoot weekly. The recoil between the both is not "too" different. The 25-06 has a little more snap to it. Weight of the gun has a lot to do with it also..<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Both calibres would be perfect for what you want, however I slightly favor the 7mm-08 over the 25-06,having used both,I think the the 7mm range of projectiles is superior to the 25 cal range, you will have less muzzle blast with the 7mm-08 & the short action of the 7mm-08 may save a slight amount in weight.
I found the 25-06 performs better in longer barrels 26 inches where the 7mm-08 preforms well in shorter barrels, around the 22 to 24 inch mark.
There is not alot in it & both calibres would be great for your purposes.
I'm sure you'll enjoy which ever you get.

Why not consider a .260 Rem? It will kill as well and as far as either the 7mm/08 or the .25-06, and it kicks noticeably less than both. Also functions through a short action.

Actually, with a blindfold, good ear muffs and in the same weight rifles, you would be hard pressed to tell the recoil apart from a 260 Rem and a 7mm-08 Rem. You could even throw a 243 Win in the mix and it would still be hard to tell. Not much recoil with any of them. Although the 7mm-08 is ballistically superior to the 260 and 243.

frizz - I'm sure yoou're right about the recoil of these rounds being nearly equal. Maybe it has just been the rifles I've used when shooting the 6.5mm's (all custom jobs with nice stocks and recoil pads), but the .260 Rem feels at the bench more like a .243 or .257 Roberts, while the 7mm/08 feels more like a .308. I am extremely sensitive to recoil, and I can pretty much shoot the .243/.257/.260 all day, while the 7mm/08 and .308 get to me after a couple of boxes. This is one of the reasons I'm so high on the .260 as a deer round.
Just as an aside, as far as short action standard rounds are concerned, the .284 Win actually bothers me after three or four groups.

RE: Recoil: 7-08 vs. 25-06?
Yeah Frizzeller is correct,my 243 weighs about 3 ounces more than my 7mm-08 & I cant tell the difference in recoil with lighter bullet weights,up to 130 - 140 grainers, it becomes a bit heavier after that though but still not bad,the 260 would be the same.
The 25-06 recoil is maybee a bit sharper or faster but no heavier than the 7mm-08.
Go the 7mm-08 it is ballistically supperior to them all & with the right bullet selection it is a very capeable calibre.
