Maybe a Remington model 7 in something like 243, 7mm08 or maybe get a 270 or 30-06 with the low recoil loads.

If he goes with the larger caliber with the low recoil loads, then when he gets better he could switch to regular loads and go after some larger game

i like all the rounds mentioned, (260 and the 7mm08 are two of my favorites).you may also have/need to consider a LER scope if he can't get "over" the rifle.him being that big i know is bad but that procedure is also dangerous, best wishes and prayers for your friend

Just thought of another thing that might help. They may be a little expensive for a beginning rifle but look into a lever action rifle (a BLR still lets you use suggested calibers) as a man of his size may find it a chore just to reach over and operate the bolt action with the right hand. I guess you only know 'how big' he is, but it may be a nice little something to consider.

I hunt with a guy that is 490lbs. He breaks every single chair he sits in, restaurants and including the seats in his truck. I don't even let him get into my truck. I can't imagine the strength of the wheel chair your buddy sits in. Makes you wonder what it's made of.

Its really too bad for your friend, hopefully he can loose a lot of weight soon, before it is too late. A 7mm08 or .243 with a sized stock would probably be a very good choice.

Hate to be a downer but I have 2 friends that have had that surgery.
One lasted 3 years or so the other was on his death bed twice within the first 2 years. Now he is about 4 years into it and is a changed man!
