Depends if you're wanting a revolver or simply a 'handgun'.
The Thompson break-open handguns make the catridge selection forever wide but since I assume you're new to hanguns I think the before mentioned 30-30 is a good one. For revolvers I'd look into the Single Action Rugers (Blackhawks) The new 'hunter blackhawks' come with rings and scope mounts built in...I love mine. I'd stay with .44 mag because the .357 just isn't going to cut it out past 100yards and the they aren't available in 454 casull. The Double Actions (Redhawks) are...but its recoil is not for the beginner. In .44 magnum pick something 240gr or above and practice, practice, practice. One thing my Blackhawk has taught me is that being accurate with a rifle doesn't mean jack when you first transfer over to handguns. |

ORIGINAL: MichaelT. Sure Brutal, I recommended that cal. because he says to 100 yards. Not past, just up to. The 30-30 round is very effective within that range, and it has a reasonable recoil. You can find the ammo at any walmart or mom and pop store. Most people don't really think about the recoil in a hand cannon, and it can be quite shocking the first time someone shoots one. I personally am looking for something bigger and better. I am about to pick up an ENCORE wiitha 15" stainless barrell, rubber grip and foreend , in a .243 most likely, .308 maybe ( with low recoil rounds available ) . But going within his stated wants and price, a new handgun shooter, and availability of ammo, the 30-30 would be hard to beat. Especially with the newer soft tip Hornady rounds on the market. Hope this explained it for you. From my experience in rifles, it seems a 6mm, .25 or .26 would kick much less than any 30 cal cartridge. |
