RE: Weatherby Accumark 30-378 stainless/brake

But as you can see, those who have one would not trade it for anything. Those who don't, do not recommand it.
Not entirely true.I actually owned an accumark in 30-378 for a short time. When they were first announced,I managed to get my name on the top of the order listofa local dealerand my gun was one of the first in Alberta.Howeverbefore I got to fire it,the dealer called me and asked if I would consider selling it for a profit.I looked at the gun andthe cost of brass, compared it to the price of a custom rifle, compared the ballistics to that of the 300ultramag,and I sold the rifle for a very healthy profit.I had a custom 300ultramag built for the price that I sold the accumark for and comparing the two the differences are:
1)the 30-378 has noticeable more recoil
2)the 30-378 factory loads produce about 70fps more than my handloads
3)my 300ultramag is considerably more accurate
4)the fit and finish is much better on my rifle. The action on the accumark was not centered in the stock properly so the gap was larger on one side of the barrel than the other.
5)whether using factory loads or factory loads, the 300ultramag brass or loads are much lower priced.

In the end.I am happy to have sold the 30-378.

Thank You all. I appreciate your help. But as you can see, those who have one would not trade it for anything. Those who don't, do not recommand it. And you all have good points. That's why an ignorant like me has a hard time making up his mind. I'll go with Haugenna: contact Weatherby and get their story. I didn't find an e-mail address for them. Will have to write a letter. I don't reload, but now that I'm retiring, will have time to do it. I'm glad to hear that the recoil is tolerable with the brake.... don't know if the sergent-at-arms at the local field will let me use it. Other members might complaint about the noise. Will keep you posted...might takea few months. No dealer in Canada has one but one dealer in Alberta is expecting a couple in november, and no dealer in the States will ship to Canada. Customs officers have gone crazy since 9-11. They don't even let scopes pass.

Thats what you should do. In fact I recommend you buy 2. It isn't my money.

You got advise from folks that have experence with guns that burn 100gr of powder and has killed at the distances you talk about. I am sure weatherby is going to be so much more honest. In fact I believe you should believe all you read. :D

Stubblejumper...I would expect as much from a custom rifle costing considerably more than an Accumark.

Except I did not pay considerably more more my rifle.
I am in Canada where an accumark in 30-378 costs $2000 Can.

Using todays prices in Canadian dollars.

new remington sps rifle for donor action-$500

action trued, lapped and feed rails opened up for ultramag cartridge $200

mcmillan stock and bedding $550

premium match grade barrel installed and fluted $750

Total price-$2000 Canadian

So there you go,you can have a factory accumark with a Criterion barrel, put together to factory tolerances,or you can have a lapped and trued action,a real kreiger barrel and a mcmillan stock for the same price.

To Stubblejumber,
Almost unbelievable that your 30-378 had such a gap. Maybe because it was a first production line rifle and the quality control department boys were out for lunch. Hope they're better now.
Thank's

:DIn your very own words....."I sold the rifle for a very healthy profit.I had a custom 300ultramag built for the price that I sold the accumark for"

Dont really know what a "very healthly profit" might bebut when you add that to the price of an Accumark what do you have?

$2000 rifle + healthy profit = what? $2500-$3000

I sold the accumark for a $400 profit but that was several years ago andat that time both the accumark and a custom rifle cost less. And I did not say that I spent all of the proceeds onthe barerifle .I did need mounts and a scope, dies and brassas well and the difference went towards those items. The prices that I gave both for the Accumark and to build a rifle are todays prices however.

Which "Customs" are you talking about pierre? Here's a link that may help you clear up a few things:

cwhitenton,
I was talking about those canadian customs officers who sitat a warehouseand check parcels coming in. I read a thread (don't remember where) where guys said that scopes where returned to the US by those officers because they were part of guns. Then some US dealers got wise and wrote on the customs form that they were ''magnifying glasses to see far objects'' and some scopes made it through.
Believe it or not.

I edited my last post to include a link for importing firearms into Canada, hope that helps.
