Mossberg 835

Hi guys. I bought a used but never shot Mossberg 835 from a buddy. Paid 200 bucks. It is a pump, shoots 2 3/4", 3" and 3 1/2" shells. It is a faily ugly balck stock. I am thinking of making it a dedicated turkey gun and mounting a red dot or 2X scope.
Any one have any experience with these guns for turkey? I would think it makes a good goose and crane gun too.

Check out the turkey hunting forum, you'll find a lot of guys shooting 835's. They are one of the top selling turkey guns.

I love mine. I use it for everything from ducks and geese to doveto turkeys and even on the trap and skeet fields. Even got a barrel for the slugs!

Great all around gun.

I put on a red dot... a cheap one for turkey and it works fine.

So far this year i have taken around 25 birds with it.

I owned (past tense) one. Couldn't stand to shoot it. That sucker killed on both ends. Mine had the synthetic stock and didn't weigh hardly anything. With 3 1/2 inchers it would flat put the hammer to me. I'm usually not particulary recoil sensitive but I just didn't enjoy that thing. I took it to a gun show and traded it off a few springs back for a browning BPS. It was a good weapon, just kicked like a bay mule.

Well Shato davis, I too am not relishing my first shots with 3.5" heavey shot. But I figure I can take it a few times a year. My dove gun is a winchester model 1400 and it shoots like a kitten.
And thanks to all of you others for answering my questions. That is 4 shooters who love thier 835 and I who didn't. I think it will be a good gun and Mosseberg is the working man's pump gun.

might as well make it 5 .

I had been in the market for one last year, just happened to be at 'that big box store' where they were closing out the wood/blue models. Out the door cost, $132, NIB. In the goose fields, I call it the LIGHTNING ROD.

OKCMCO,

absolutely. I hope that it performs well for you. Mine shot very well it was just too light. I wasn't intending to run your choice down. YOu asked for experiences, so I tried to as truthfully as possible relate mine. Best of luck.

Great choice. I bought mine the year they came out (I think I was 13?). I've been very happy with it and it can do anything well but really shines as a turkey gun. I have a Bushnell Holosight on mine. My dad killed a turkey at just over 50 yards with my gun (super full turkey choke). I've killed quite a few with it as well (not that far though). It's probably the best turkey gun out there for the money, considering they can be had new for about $250 I think.

Yepper when not using the bow using the 835. Got a new Star Choke for it and after using a Red Dot and open sights now use a Tru Glo, sort of in between. Love it. Except for the two this fall all have been harvested with it, it even harvested one for my brother! :D

the barrel size is of 10 gauge dimensions istead of twelve gauge which is what its chamber for, this elps for tighter patterns which is great for turkeys which im pretty sure was what the gun was designed especially for andyway.
