New Hornady Loads for 45-70
Does anyone have any informationon shooting the new hornady ballistictips in a 45-70? I picked up a box, and am planning on using them this season, but am wondering about others who may have already invested the time, and what they have found out about these loads.

RE: New Hornady Loads for 45-70
I haven't shot the 45-70 but I did the .450 Marlin which is basically the same thing. They shoot really accurate in my gun. At 100 yards we were getting 1" groups with a couple touching. I haven't shot anything with them yet but the dead tree we use to hold the target up sure shakes when they hit. We can shoot it with a 30-06 and it will never move but when you shoot it with the .450 you can tell when it hits. They should be great for hogs which is what I bought mine for.

if you go by Hornady's published numbers then you can expect considerably better performance than the old round nose loads.
Heck they (almost?)turn a 30-30 into a legitimate 300 yard deer rifle! Pretty amazing. You can see the published numbers here: https://www.hornady.com/shop/?ps_session=ea15560fbdf6b2e6aad1c3e182783170&p age=shop%2Fbrowse&category_id=e2efc3a895f8f600 4aa5509977a8de6e Compare to Federals 300 grain Speer Hot Core SP. You should expect 400 ft/lbs more energy at 100 yards and about 200 ft/lbs more at 200 yards. They both fizzle to a little over 1,000 ft/lbs at 300 yards. They still drop like a rock though. |
