300. WSM or 300. Ultar Mag. for Deer Hunting.
 

Does anyone have one of these guns yet.
If so is the kick bad on a 300. ultar mag?
Or is the kick on a 300. WSM bad?
Please help me out on this.
Also is a 300. Ultar mag or a 300. WSM to big for Deer hunting for a 50 to 150 yard shot on a Deer.

A 30-30 would be adequate for deer up to 150 yards. The 300WSM would be adequate to 400 yards or better and the 300UM has another 100 yards or more on the WSM provided you can shoot accurately that far under hunting conditions. I wouldn't say that they are too big cause they are 30 cal bullets just like the 30-30 but I would use a "hold together bullet" so they don't come apart under high velocity at close range. If you ever go elk and/ or moose hunting then you would be set with one of the mags. As far as one being bad, I don't think either one are bad. You will, however, get many differences of opinions on these two cartriges. There are thoes who like one or the other and just as many who don't for one reason or another.

How 'bout a .50 BMG....or 20mm Vulcan???....just kidding!...if your max. range is 150 yards then just about every other caliber will kill a deer just as dead without killing your shoulder.What do you use now...and why do you feel you need an Ultramag??

the 300 um will hit you.yes a bad kick
with a brake on, it's like a 300 winn.
I have shot a 7mm wsm and liked it.
I would thick the 300 wsm would be less
then a 300 win.

and if your going to haul 7 pounds around
all day why not a gun that can shot
20 yards to 300 with out droping much.
go for it.

for shots under 300yds you don't need a magnum. especially you don't need a ultra magnum. i have seen tons apon tons of new ultra mags that are on shelves with only a box of rounds through them because of recoil.
there are better calibers out there that would suffice and be alot easier on your wallet.
if you like 30caliber rounds. go with the 30-06sprg. but if you had to pick between the two i would go with the 300WSM.

If your used to shooting a slug gun, then the 300Ultra is a piece of cake. I think its definately made for the more advance shooter. I know what your thinking. Your probably thinking you could get one and use it for all game from Moose to deer. Yea, you can. I used mine last year on a deer. I just wanted to throw some blood on it before going moose hunting. I was also curious on how it performed. I shot a 100lb doe at 200 yards with Nosler Bullistic tips. Oh yea, it picked her up and threw her down with authority. But no meat damage or anything. Just thought it was bad luck to take that gun moose hunting without field testing. I always, and almost always use my semi auto 270 deer hunting. Why, because it good luck.

If your thinking that you need this gun for moose, caribou or whatever, let me tell you a secret. All my guides ever use up there is .308 and .270Win. One, that hunted with this year only uses a .243 7600.

Also, if I had it to do over, I wish I had got the 300WSM. I just like short actions. But now, I have a accurate RUM, with hundreds of peices of brass, dies, and all, so no use for me to get any other .300Mag. These days I am on a light kick. And mags usually ain't light.

I have a 300WSM and the recoil is not that bad, I went to the range and put 20 shells through it and did not bother me.

Is it too much gun for 50 to 150 yard shots, no I don't think so. It is all in what you are comfortable with. As others have mentioned the 270 and 308 are also good choices, but I love my 300WSM. I will find out how the deer like it in another week.

For your purposes, a 7x57 Mauser would be absolutely perfect. <img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>
