You ask a camp full of hunter's for an opinion and you got it. I love my 300UM I will shoot a "Hi-Horse Power" hand load if we're Elk hunt-
the Mt. St.Helens area and I have dropped a 3 point Blacktail in his
tracks at 75 yds with a light load 150gr Ballistic tip. We all know it's the placement of the projectile. Speeking only for myself since I
switched to Ballistic tip bullets on all my North American Cont. hunts
whether I'm using my 270, 7mm, 300UM or 338. The most important part of any successful hunt is know your equipment and understand the elements of your present hunt. All the answers I read were correct and
keep in mind the "Tried and Trued 30-06" is still to this day the No1
all around multi purpose hunting caliber. Good luck and take your time
in buying you have a year to decide.

I own two 300ultramags and use them for all my moose and elk hunting.I have shot deer with them and damage was no worse than most other cartridges if lung shots are used.I do not choose to use the ultramag for deer hunting as it is really not needed for any deer hunting. As for your comparison you should be comparing the wsm with the remington ultramag short which is very similar in performance. The ultramag is a much more powerful cartridge that is in a different class altogether.

300RUM - do you need it for deer? no. But if you want and can handle one...then buy one. I have shot one and with a bummed shooting shoulder, their was no way on god's green earth I could comfortably...without flinch, shoot this gun day in & day out. The 300 WSM I also shot and very comfortable for me to handle...but seeing I am left and nobody makes a southpaw model yet....I went to a BDl in 7 Rem Mag. I would say the recoil is similar with these 2 IMO. Do you reload? B/C if not then look at the 300 Win mag, as more choice for off the shelf ammo (at least in my research/area).
Really it boils down to you, if you settle than you'll never be happy. Buy what makes you happy and is comfortable to shoot. This more times than not is more important than the cal or gun, it is self confidence and that's what makes the rifle.....GREAT.
