close range gun

i already have a .30-06 but i hunt two different areas one is an agg field and the other is a ceder tree field where the shots are at a max of 100 yards i was wondering what short range fast gun would be best for this situation. any caliber and gun brand for under 400 dollars.

Marlin 336 30-30 w/ traditional flat point bullets. Cheap, reliable, and quick to aim(I'm assuming we're talking deer?).

30-30 is an outstanding suggestion, so is the 35 Rem, or 44 mag...you should be able to get all of these in a lever action for less than $400.

You may also want to consider using a shotgun slug, given your criteria.

If I were in your shoes, I'd get a 44 mag or slug gun just b/c they seem to leave better blood trails.

good luck!

I LOVE my marlin 1895G in .45/70!!!! If you don't hit them with the bullet, the fire out the barrel will gett'em!!

a Marlin 336 in .30/30 or .35 would aslo be a good idea. .35 remmy is a bit tougher to find ammo for though.

A used 760 pump (18 inch barrel) and a box of managed recoil ammo..I shot a few out of my nephews 30-06 yeseterday,Way less recoil than my daughters 243.. Way less recoil and very accurate...

Marlin 336 .30-30 or Win 94 "Trapper" .30-30

Dead is dead whether it is a 30-378 WBY at 5 yds or a 44 Rem Mag at 150 yds. For short range what is wrong with what you have, if you just want a new gun get anything that sparks your interest....

Well, if you get a nice Remington Model 760 slide action carbine in .308 Win., you can use it either place. No action is any faster than a slide action. The 760's are generally more accurate than the Rem. autoloaders, and are just as fast to operate, once you get familiar with them......

I second eldeguello on this. For years I hunted with either a low mounted scoped bolt gun, or an iron sighted lever, I always seemed to be carrying the wrong gun for the situation. This year I'm taking out my new pump 308 with a lowpowered scope on see-thru rings, the best of both worlds.

Before the replies start coming in: yes, I know you guys hate the see-thru rings, this is the set-up I want for this gun.

Any gun that will kill at 300 yards will also kill at 50! You are just looking for an excuse to buy one. Just say what the hell and go ahead, you know something has triped your fancy, so buy it!

A 7600 or 760 pump in 3006 0r .308. Then load it with 180 gr round nosed bullets with lots of lead exposed.

I agree with carp master .But I do love the old 45/70 for that kind of shooting. It will remove the finger prints. If that is to much round for ya the 30-30 ,.44mag, 444,35 rem, are all good up close rounds. I just like a flat or round nose bullet at close range.

The .45/70 is indeed a good cartridge, and in a single-shot rifle you can use pointed bullets loaded to some impressive energy (and recoil!!) levels! Such loads take the .45/70 OUT of the short-range category!

However, I see no particular point in buying a gun chambered for a short-range cartridge like the .44 Magnum, .35 Remingtonor .30/30 on purpose! Indeed, these are all good short-range cartridges, but that's all. Like fornra says, a gun that will kill at 300 yards will also kill at 50! And a fast-handling .308, .338 Federal, .358 Win. or .35 Whelen will do both! Any of these can be used in a fast Remington pump carbine or Browning BLR, either of which is as fast handling as any Marlin or Winchester levergun!
