I have a Bushnell Holosight on my Nova Rifled Cantilever, and one on my son's 870 20ga, rifled barrel, saddle mount. Practical, fast acquisition, and where the dot is, the slug goes. A red dot would by my second choice. The Holosights are pricey, but I got both of mine at good prices on ebay.

So USNRETHunter, you would also suggest a halo sight? I suppose they are quite a bit more than a red dot?

Great for fast target acquisition and tracking.
With no magnification, using both eyes open is easy.

Get a bigger diameter like 30 mm for a decent field of view, and turn the power up only as much as you need to in low light so the dot doesn't drown out the target.

I love the holosights. They retail for about $230, but I snagged both of mine off eBay over the slow summertime for right about $150 each. One of them a guy won in a drawing, but didn't hunt.
The holosight is a both eyes open, quick acquisition sight, which is great in the group hunt that I'm with during shotgun season. When on post and the herd is going by, you can be choosing the next shot while pulling the trigger. On the other hand, I can drill a milk jug at 100yds.
The holosight has a 65MOA circle with a 1MOA dot. At 50yds, you can put the circle around the deer's shoulders and know you have a good kill shot.
