RE: 45/70 GOVT..
Hornady make the Leverution ammo, but I think that's only if you use a lever-action. I think that all 45/70 Govs are either lever, or they're break actions.

RE: 45/70 GOVT..
I love that round to. It will make a great wound channel. But I have to tell ya the .450 has nothing on it , ammo selection makes alot of difference. I can load some pretty hot loads for for the mighty 45/70.

RE: 45/70 GOVT..
I use it, 300gr partition with 47gr IMR4198 in my "Post72" 1895 marlin. Does make a fine deer round. Little more powerful than my Muzzleloader. Man, whats with the caps? Makes it hard to read.

RE: 45/70 GOVT..
ORIGINAL: Magnum_Man_300 I hunt with the 45-70 andI use 350 GR JSP at 2100 FPS |
RE: 45/70 GOVT..
My goto deer load is a barnes original 300gr fp in front of enough imr-4198 to get 2150 fps. You are right on about the blood trails and quick kills.

RE: 45/70 GOVT..
The 2100 fps load with the 350 grain bullet is listed for the Ruger No. l. Its to hot for most 45-70's
I don't use the 45-70 much for deer although its certainly capable. I save it for the bigger than deer stuff. And long range Black Powder target shooting. |

RE: 45/70 GOVT..
For Big bears or moose, I like the Hornady 350 grain RN. Fot the Marlin I load it to about 1900 FPS. I had a Ruger N0 3 in 45-70, you really knew you had touched off a load with Ruger level loads in that fly weight No 3.;)

RE: 45/70 GOVT..
SWAMP ROOST...that ol govt mule ..you gotta love that kick..remington 300gr SJHP

RE: 45/70 GOVT..
My most recent load is 52gr H335 and a Rem 405 jsp in winchester brass with cci 200 primers. I have to use the Lee factory crimp die to get an oal suitable for my 1895, but it's super accurate, and hits like a sledge hammer. I havn't choronagraphed any of them yet and frankly don't care too,as they are awsome on the muzzle and quiet rude at the butt.

RE: 45/70 GOVT..
If you want a mild practice load, try 13.0 grains of Unique with a Magnum rifle primer. Its about 1105-1200 fps with a 405 grain Lead bullet. You don't need any filler or wads and its pretty accurate in most rifles.

RE: 45/70 GOVT..
Swamp Rooster,
Welcome to the Big Bore Club! You're going to love that thumper! I bought my Marlin 45/70 Guide Gun in 2000 and have had nothing but excellent results. I reload my own ammo and started out with a400 gr. Speer bullet on top of 40 gr. of IMR 4198.It wasn't fast, but it dropped em' like a ton of bricks. It's a great gun for up here in the Adirondacks. Last year Iswitched to a 300 gr. Hollow Pt. on top of 50gr. of Reloader 7 and continued to have great results. I'm now reloading this round for several of the guys inour hunting party.Yep.. you read that right. Most of the guys I hunt with are nowhunting with 45/70's. Now I'm not trying to start a flame about"knock down power", but I've taken my share of deer with .30-30's, .30-06, .35 Rem., 7mm Mag, andin my own experience, that 45/70 puts em down faster than any of the others. Good luck this hunting Season! |
