Is there a way to find the amount of recoil a particular gun/bullet generates? Either online or a formula. Thanks

The calculator that stubble gave is a great tool and very accurate but you may not have all that info.

Here is the formula:

recoil kenetic energy (KE)

KE=MV^2/GC

M= rifle mass
V = rifle speed as it moves to the rear
GC = the gravitational constant for Earth which is 64.32

To determine rifle velocity (V) = bullet weight(grains)/7000*bullet velocity(fps) + powder weight(grains)/7000*powder gas velocity(fps) = MV

Get powder weight(grains) by pulling bullets and weighing charges.

Gas velocity varies but A-Square loading manuals says that 5,200 fps is a useful average. The 7000 in the forumla simply converts grains to pounds so that the units make sense in the end.

Also remember, KE is not "kick". Felt recoil differs and is influenced by numerous factors including what you ate for breakfast that morning. Ok that last part wasa joke...lol. :eek:

You can look up reloading data online to find the weight of powder charges.For total gun weight,you need to add the weight of the scope and mounts to the publishedgun weight.

published weight is close enough it's not an exact science since KE doens't even convey felt recoil it's just a comparison exercise.

Scope and mounts are rarely more than 2 lbs more.

Just ad hoc the rest

or take your rifle to a UPS shipping store like I did and force them to weigh it.
