RE: Weatherby 270 Wby ulta lightweight
I have owned two weatherby mark Vs and was dissappointed in the accuracy of both. Also be aware that the cost of 270wby ammunition runs from $50 to $70 per boxin Canada. If I was in your position,I would go with a tikka rifle in 270wsm or 7mmremmag.The tikka comes with an accuracy guarantee of 3 shots in 1" vs the weatherby accuracy guarantee of 3 shots in 1-1/2".And both the 270wsm and 7mmremmag offer similar ballistics to the 270wby,but with a better selection of factory loads,at much lower prices. If you want a more expensive rifle, the sako costs about the same as the weatherby and offers an accuracy guarantee of 5 shots in 1".

If you just like the Weatherby, get the Vanguard SUB MOA in 270WSM. Similar ballistics, same basic stock design, and less than 1/2 the price with a less than 1" guarentee at 100 yards - but it's heavier!

RE: Weatherby 270 Wby ulta lightweight
The price of the vanguard SUB MOAis usuallyaround $1000 in Canada. If you really wantthe weatherby name, the standardvanguard can be had for about $600.The standard vanguard offers the same 1-1/2" accuracy guarantee as the mark V.The tikka t-3 sells for about the same price as a standard vanguard, and offers the 1" accuracy guarantee.

Jaunty Dan:
I own Weatherby Mark V's, and so do some of my friends. All together we own 9 Weatherby Mark V's, and they all shoot under 1.00" at 100 m, and some shoot under .50". Good luck. |
RE: Weatherby 270 WBY Ulta Lightweight
Jaunty Dan,
This is a great gun...one of the best lightweight you can get, although as you may know it will costmore than the average rifle = $1200. I too am looking at purchasing a lightweight mountain rifle and in addition to the wby I am considering these two: Sako Finnlight and Kimber 84 or 8400 Montana. All three are $1000+. I have found the weight, balance, synthetic material, action is superior on these three vs all other"lightweight" rifles. The 270wby maground would be ideal for the west up to CXP3 game but a little overkill in the Forested areas of the east. The exorbitant priceof Weatherbyammo would be the only reason preventing me from purchasing this round. For one who frequents thethe rangethis round would betoo expensive to shoot. If this is your first gun I would get a bread and butter 270, 30-06, or a .308. Therefore, this rifle/caliber combination would begreatfor someone that hunts out west often, does not shoot a large number of rounds often, is purchasing as a novelty gun in addition to a bread and butter gun, or is willing to spend the extra cash on ammo. |
