Are there any inexpensive sabot slugs>?

I bought a rem. 870 with a cantilever barrel and scope about 4 months ago but later got layed off from my job so money is very tight right now. I need to find an inexpensive sabot slug so that I can by 5-6 boxes to sight gun in and have enough leftover to hunt. Thanks for any suggestions.

sorry to hear your laid off.

i just spent $11.99 per box on winchesters 12ga. gold partion sabot slugs.

all i can say is stay with winchester, federal, remington, or lightfields. try there non premium line, the deer dont know the difference.

ive always had luck sighting in quickly with the lightfields, all try them when i try the winchesters in my new remington 11-87 rifled barrel, with cantilever.

I do not know how much the lightfields go for but I have heard alot of people having good luck with them.

Personally I use the Brenneke 2-3/4" 1oz loads. I shoot a Wincherter 1300 with a rifle choke and shoot 3" groups at 100 yards with a Bushnell scope. I know these only run about $3 per box. I know when I first started using them I tried several manufactures and differnt Brenneke slugs to find the ones that worked best for my gun.

Hope this helps

Good luck with your search.

Lightfield and brenneke are two that i've been thinking about. Does anybody have a website for either of them? The boxes don't do a very good job of telling whether they are for rifled or smoothbore on either one of these brands. Any other cheaper slugs anybody can reccommend

Brenneke regular slugs are the cheapest that I've found to perform out of my Hastings barrel. 3 touching at 100 yds.

Active and Fiocchi are supposed to also be good regular slugs for rifled barrels but I've never tried them.

The standard Foster types usually don't do well from rifling.

dont bother with brenneke's web site. i asked a question 3mos ago, and im still havent heard a reply. if you do a search at google.com you should have luck. also check out federal, i think they make a midgrade saboted slug. good luck

Sorry to hear 'bout your job, know how you feel. That said...don't ruin your hunt trying to save 5 or 10 bucks(no pun intended!)...you just bought a new gun,you will spend how much on your hunt(gas, food, lodging, license, etc.),ammo is probably the cheapest element of all.Buy a box from as many brands as you can afford....use the one which groups the best in your gun.Also...ALL sabot rounds are designed to be fired from a rifled barrel.A smooth-bore does not impart any spin to the slug, and a rifled choke tube is marginal at best.

in my state. MA. you can only use shotguns. i have still having a hard time to lay my hands on these win gold partition sabot's.

i think the rem copper solids are still the cheapest. $9.00.

alos if money is hard up. try brenneke's. i have had decent groups with them in rifled barrel in my rem 1100. also rem sluggers did a decent job as well. ( when i was laid off last year ) good out to 100yds.

I BOUGHT A 870 IN 2000 IF YOURS HAS A RIFLED BARREL TRY LIGHTFIELD OR FEDERAL IN 2-3/4 INCH DONT USE 3 INCH SHELLS THEY WONT PATTERN. THE ONLY DEF. BETWEEN THE LIGHT, AND THE FEDERAL IS THE LIGHTS LEAVE A BIGGER HOLE. BUT AT 70 TO 75 YARDS WITH OUT A REST I CAN HIT THE SME HOLE ALMOST EVERY TIME. BY THE WAY I HAVE A 20 GUAGE IT IS A LOT MORE FORGIVEING NO BRUSING

I bought the Lightfield 2 3/4 Hybreds for $6.99 at Dicks Sporting Goods last week. I didn't want to spend that much either because I also needed to sight in the gun. I called the tech line and spoke to a guy there for 20 minutes, he was a big help to my accuracy. You really should call them (I got the number from the web site), he explained the ballistics of the slug, shooting in the wind and sighting in better than anyone I have talked to. He told me to sight in at 50 yards at about 2.5 inches high and then it will hit dead on at 100 yards. It's 9 inches low at 150 yards. I only needed 6 slugs to get it dead on and then shot a total of ten to see how I could do. He will tell you to hold the foregrip tightly as the slug is still in the barrel when the muzzle jumps. 95% of my shots are under 75 yards and I have no doubt I can hit them with the Lightfields. Well worth the money and the phone call, give them a try.

I just shot 5 different brands last night through my 870 rifled barrel.

Lightfield Hybred Sabot 1 1/4oz 2 3/4in 1400fps
Federal Barnes Expander Sabot 1oz 2 3/4in 1450fps
Remington 1oz 2 3/4in Sabot 1450fps
Winchester Super X Sabot 1oz 2 3/4in 1350fps

All four boxes cost me around $35.

I also happened to have a box of Winchester Supreme 400gr 2 3/4 Sabots. The newest shell from Wincester.

My gun absolutely hates these 400gr shells. They flew all over the place. My gun also did not shoot the Federals or the Remingtons very well. The Lightfields were better but still not as tight a group as I would have liked. The Winchester Super X shells flew the best. Interestingly enough, they have the slowest muzzle velocity. The group was not ultra tight but the holes did touch in a pattern shaped sorta like this \. I should note that I was resting the gun on a sandbag and using another sandbag against my shoulder to manage the recoil so I could have been adding some torque. I'll know more when I can shoot from a vice. As for now, I'm going to buy some boxes of Winchester Super X and go with them this season.
