6.5-284 range report

You all may recall that last winter I built a 6.5-284 on a rem. action & 26" Douglas match grade barrel. Well, this weekend I shot a few groups through it. Load development is complete: settled on 51 gr. of Alliant R22 powder, 140 gr. Seirra GameKing bullets, Lapua Brass, & CCI BR2 primers. Chronographed at approx. 2900 FPS.

Best group measured .685" Out to out = .421" group
Average of three, 5 shot groups was .552"
Shot off bench &rest with 36X Weaver scope at 100 yds

Nothing like a 1/2 MOA hunter!!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D

I'm sure the groups will spread a little when I put a hunting power scope on it but at least I know it can do it.

Sounds like a winner. I have been tossing the idea around of a 6.5-06. It was , at one time a pretty popular round as well it should be. The ballistics should be much like you are seeing with the 284 case. I look forward to a field report.

James,

The 6.5-06 looks to be a great round. I was at a toss up whether to build it or my 284. My father decided to build the -06 while I built the -284. Either way I think the 6.5 bullet is a winner. Just a few more weeks and I hopefully will have a field report on the weapon as I'm taking it to wyoming to hunt those speed goats.

This is a very popular caliber among the 1,000 yard shooters. Seems to really come into it's own out past 600 yards. I personally prefer the 6MM-284 for goat hunting.

Roskoe,

Thats what pushed me to the 6.5-284 over the 6.5-06 (1000 yard BR's) though I doubt that I ever shoot it much past 400. Anyway I like it, Truth is there are a lot of cartridge that I don't need but want none the less.:D

You are going to love your 6.5-284.....superb round. Hornady is making factory ammo for this cartridge....no longer a Wildcat! Good shooting and regards, Rick.

Hornady is making the completed cartridge? I heard the brass was being made available even marked as 6.5-284 but I didn't think they were loading them. Is anyone making a factory rifle?

I built a 6mm-284 back in 1991 as a light varminter, it's a great round and rifle. Then I got the hankering for something odd and decided to build a 6.5 Gibbs ( 6.5-06 maximumly improved). It to is a good cartridge, in my 14lb Rem 700 basedrifleit equals or surpasses 264 win mag velocities. With all the hype of the 6.5x284 these days I have almost talked myself into getting one. Been looking at some Cooper rifles, they chamber the 6.5x284 in their M22's

I know you can buy brass head stamp as 6.5-284 from Lapua, Norma, and Hornady. If Hornady is loading ammunittion it is news to me.

6.5-284 WILL be my next rifle caliber. I love the 6.5mm round.

Shato, Not knocking your groups, because 1/2-inch groups are good groups.
I just think you need to spend more "load development time" after season, before you call it good enough on that load. This is after all a custom rifle with a match grade barrel. You might just cut your group size in half?
I would try other 140-grain bullets, play with the seating depth, tryother primers, try a few more powders.
Heck if you listen to me, you will have the barrel shot out before you settle on that perfect load.:D

Have fun with it,

WK

Mine likes H4831SC and the 140 amax in Lapua brass with Fed210M primer. It will shoot 3/4"-1" at 400yds. I have not tried it past 400 yet.
