Default .277 Cal in .308 Brass

Other than a few wildcats, why hasn't there been such a cartridge?

The 27-08 never really saw any meaning with the already popular 7mm08 and somewhat newly shining260s being substitutes for the full size30 cal; forreproducing the performance of the 25-06 or 280in a shorter cartridge. I really don't see the point of the 27 caliber when there's a similar cartridge in 28 that can better be a double for larger game also, and if its strictly deer, a popularity issue is always there.

The 7mm-08 sure does seem like a pretty good substitute. Still with O'Connor pushing the .270 like he did, I would have thought that it would have seemed like a natural pregression to get the .270 in a shorter case back in the 50's - 60's. As redundant as the idea seems now...it would still be an interesting experiment in a wildcat. I wonder how it would perform relative to the original .270W, 7mm-08, and the .260Remington.

Make no doubt about it, you will probably see it.

I will tell you a little secret, the ONLY reason you see MOST new chamberings is to sellNEW guns, not because they are better. Everybody wants something NEW the customer will talk his self into believing it is better.

I put together a .270-08 Ackley Improved a few years back that gave surprising performance from a 24" barrel. It came outslightly above the regular .270 Winchester's ballistics. The project hinged on a short action Remington - and I happened to have a .270 barrel laying around the shop looking for a home. (Some customers like having something a little different) The 270 WSM came out shortly thereafter and will likely prevent any .270 caliber based on the .308 case from getting very popular.

How do you go about getting loads for such a cartridge. Is it just as simple of using 308 data with trial and error or is it from years of experience?...

As far as loadings, you could probably just develop cross referenced loads between the similar bore dia. short actions suach as the 7-08, 260 and 308....

I think that Roskoe is right the .270wsm will stop any more .270 rounds for along time. It is on the same format that you said short fat case design.

Yes, The 270- WSM is really sort of a 270-08 Improved. I was not impressed to start with with the 270 WSM but it really is the best of both worlds, It has the velocity and flat shooting ability of the 270 Win shoved into a short action. Team that in my case with the 26 inch fluted barrel Varmit model Savage rifle with accu-trigger and you have a dandy reach out and whack something rifle. The down side if there is one, it weights 8.75 lbs without opticts. For me its a stand rifle so no big deal.
