300 Savage...
 

I just bought a mint Sept 1952 build date Model 760 Remington in the 300 Savage with a 2x7 Redfield scope that seems to be almost as old as the gun. Anybody here had any dealing with this cartridge. I cant wait to get this thing out and knock a deer or three over with it this fall. Redfield must
have made a good scope at one time because this scope is extremely clear for its age. Got this gun with sling flip up caps and a box of shells for a little over 200..lol. Sometimes pawn shops are our friends :D

DoeDumper...I have the same exact rifle. The .300 Sav. caliber is great on whitetails. I shot an average buck, 120 lb., using a 150gr. Core-Lokt at maybe 50 yds.An extremely effective round given its size. My buddy used the .300 sav for years with the 180gr. Core-Lokts...same results. It is one awesome round for deer, and from what I read black bear also. You hit a deer in the vitals with the .300 Sav. and the only place they go is down! You have to see it to believe it. Other posts on the .300 said pretty much the same thing.

I took the scope off mine this a season and will go with a Williams peep sight. I'm going to Maine and will doing alot of still hunting so I gonna try the peep sights. My eyes are good so I'll give it a try.

I know you'll be real pleased with it. If not...I'llbuy it from you. Ilove .30 caliber rifles in a 760/7600 pump gun.I also have a 760 in .30-06 as well, I took 3 bucks and 1 black bear with it in 3 seasons. What a rifle, it's my favorite. I'm looking for a 760 carbine in .308 but no luck, if you can put me in touch with one I'd appreciate it.

The 300 Savage was a big improvment over the old 30-30. Not far behind the 308, it will take most NA game. pretty effective on big game with the 165 and 180 grain bullets. For deer, its a fine round and the 760 is hard to beat. Have you picked up loading stuff for it yet? Come deer season you won't know which new rifle to try out first.;)

NO havent bought any dies yet. I do hope there is brass available out there for it. James I am probably gonna end up carrying that and that m96 this year...lol. I dont think I have ever shot better offhanded than I can with that 6.5. Thats still using those open sights..lol.

NYChunter I knew soon as I picked that one up it was going home :DSome guns just got a good feel to them when you pick em up. This was one. I dunno if I have even seen a 760 carbine around here...seen several 742/7400 carbines. I will keep watch though.

I have a die set and some new brass I will send off to you. It may take me a few days to find it though. The wife has all this usless junk in my way to find things;). I think I have at least 50 or 100 new brass and a Lee die set. I am sure that Midway still has new brass. I know they do for the 250 Savage.

That poor 7mm-08 will just collect dust now:D. I don't know about you gun nuts.

The .300 was my first deer rifle. It was a Savage Model 99. An oldie but a goodie.....I still shoot it sometimes for fun.
I used 165gr Nosler Ballistic tips (hand loaded) for it and it was deadly within 200 yards. I also used the Nosler failsafes and they worked really well.
I shot my first 7 deer with this gun before I upgraded to my 30-06

Since its an old cartridge and has no Magnum or Ultra tacked on its name, you may have to shoot the deer many, many times and even then you may have to explain to the critter that he is dead.:D

The first big game animal I ever shot (a bull moose) was with a borrowed Sav. 99 in .300 sav. Then I hunted with a number of different rifles and cartridges for about 30 years. The last moose I shot was with a Sav. 99 in .300 sav. This is one of two I now own. She's a keeper.

LOL You have taught me well Uncle James!:DI am thinking the 165 nosler bt's at about 2400-2500 would be hard to beat for deer outta this thing. I think I am about to reach the point of too many rifles as compared to available hunting days :D The quickest I ever had deer fall on a regular basis was shooting a round nose 180 gr out of a 742 30-06 at about 2450 fps.

I wonder if the 760 in that caliber is fairly rare? I cant imagine there not being a bunch of them out there.

Doe Dumper...you're right there are more than few 760's in .300 Sav around. Back in the early50's when our guns were made there weren't many .308's on the market yet. I believe the .308 round hit the market in '52.I think that'swhy most.30 caliber 760's with the grooved fore-end are in .30-06 or .300 Sav.

Anyway, you can get new unprimed brass for the .300 sav. from Cabela's. They get $26.99 per 100, $124.99 per 500.

You are getting about like me. I need a gun cabnet with wheels to take everything afield.:D. I think the 165 or 180 would work well. Another good one to try would be the Speer 150 grain Mag Tip. They expand very well at speeds from 2000 fps on up. They work great in the T?C 30-30 barrel at 2100 fps. A friend of mine has taken some trophy whitetail and caribou with that combo. Tghat out to 200 yards or a bit more. That bullet was off the market for a while but its back now and its a good one.

I have seen quite a few 300 Savages in the 760. As mentioned above, it was the hottest 30 caliber Non Mag out there for quite some time. I have one in the 700 Classic but I don't shoot that one.

Changed out the mounts on this gun to get it ready to shoot today. Well turns out it was built before factory drilling and tapping was the norm..lol. Sooo the 1 piece Weaver base was just a tad off. I took a gringer and cut the base in half and it works perfect now. Found a good set of low rings and put the scope in them and had to remove the front sight to get proper scope clearance. I got the ol Redfield just about perfect sight line level. I mean its RIGHT there when you shoulder it now.

Anyways..bought 2 boxes of 150 core lokts to shoot it in. The Redfield scope (God knows how old) dialed in perfectly. Took about 6-8 shots to have it 1 inch high at 100. The ol 760 really impressed me. I got 2-3 inch groups with the first load I tried. I dont know how inherently accurate the 300 Savage round is but its a winner with me. I cant wait to reload some Nosler BT's in 150 or 165 and try them out. One note...I dont know if it was due to the straight comb or the metal recoil pad but that thing knocked the snot out of me on recoil..lol. Not to worry as per James B reccomendations I ordered 2 shooters friend recoil pads today.

Function was also perfect in the 54 year old Remmy ;)I would really love to know what year that scope was made. Thats the easiest scope I have ever sighted in.

I have a 2x7 redfield Trackerm scope that I bought in the early 70's. Its my favorite scope and its been on some big rifles. It spent a couple years on my Ruger No.1 416 Rem Mag. Never phased it a bit. I have had it on 338's and 7 Mags as well as my 700 Classic 300 Win Mag. There is no hurting that old scope. When you sight it in, it stays. Never had to rezero it unless I changed rifles or drastically changed loads.
