Nikon Burris or Leupold

Let the fire begin....I'm talkin about the Burris Fullfield II, the Leupold VX-I, and the Nikon Prostaff. I wanna hear your opinions on which will hold togetherbetter for a 7mm mag. From your experiences, which has better clarity and ease of adjustment?

RE: Nikon Burris or Leupold

I have a VX-1. I have had it for several years. It has operated perfectly and is crystal clear and holds its Zero very well. I knoe the Prostaff it a good tough dependable scope as well. Never owned the Burris but I have not heard anything bad about them. I don't think you could go wrong with any of the three. Others will knock the lower end scopes but if you mount them right they will do the job just as dern well as the more expensive scopes. I am speaking of these top name brands.

I have had leupold and nikon Then I got a burris and for the money you can't beat them. They are clear and light transmission is great in low light. You can get the 4.5-14X42 for $269.00 on e-bay I jut got 2 of them. If it breaks sent it back and get it fixed. I had to sent on back a real old one that my dad gave me and I had it back in 8 days at no charge. Just my 2 cents

I stopped re-learning the scope lesson years ago. Leupold, Leupold, Leupold. Leupold's areexpensive but Nikon & Burris don't quite match the quality.

The only one that's come close is a Burris 3-12 handgun scope I put on one of my XP100's. It works fine and I enjoy the high magnification on the range, but I still prefer my Leupold 4x or 2.5-8.

RE: Nikon Burris or Leupold

Having had ALMOST every major brand of scope at one time or another and having thousands of hunting hours behind me, Hunting in all climates and high and low light hours, I have yet ti have been handi-capped in any way by my rifle scope regardless of brand. I usually buy the upper quality models but seldom the top dogs. A good reliable scope does not have to cost an arm and a leg. OR a Trophy. Scopes like the Nikon Pro-staff will not let you down.

RE: Nikon Burris or Leupold

Compare the Prostaff, VX1, and Fullfield side by side and make your own choice. They didn't have the Fullfield when I made my choice... so I can't comment on that one.. but when I compared the 3-9x40 VX1/Rifleman to the Prostaff.. the Prostaff was brighter and clearer.. not to mention $50 cheaper. For me the choice was easy...

RE: Nikon Burris or Leupold

Well, this debate will never end, however, I love the Burris Fullfield scopes with the BP Reticle.......but, my hunting rifle has a Zeiss conquest atop which gives me 20 more minutes shooting time here in Northern Missouri where we have the dreaded 4 point rule in effect. If you don't need the low light help then the Burris gets my nod. Regards, Rick.......OBTW, the Burris Signature rings are sensational......no more ring marks on your expensive scope!

RE: Nikon Burris or Leupold

I have a Leupold VX1 4-12-40 and it is a great scope.

However, I also have a Burris 3-9-40 bplex that is a quality scope.

Toss up, butif I had to pick one, I would take the one with gold ring.

Of those listed I'd go with the Burris. However I'd compare them all and add the Bushnell 3200 elite to the list as well.

RE: Nikon Burris or Leupold

I have a few Leupold VX-Is and a few Leupold VXIIs and a few Nikon Buckmasters, and and older Burris. All are good scopes that will serve you well. Like someone already stated, go to your local shop, look thru all 3, and make your decision.

HoytShooter95 09-12-2006 09:34 PM

RE: Nikon Burris or Leupold

Well I was at Gander Mountain checkin them all out and I can't tell the difference. I did see the Nikon Buckmasters as well and it seems to be clear as well. It really all comes down to whether it can stay inline.

Rammer 09-12-2006 09:46 PM

RE: Nikon Burris or Leupold

The Nikon Buckmasters will take a beating an still stay intact. I've had a 4.5-14x40 on my AR15, 243, 7mm, and now its on my Ruger 10-22. I have a brand new one in the box that I don't have a rifle for at the moment. I really like the Buckmaster scopes, they seem to transmit light in low light very well.

Leupold....Reputation speaks for itself.....
Warranty on all Leupold products is second to none...
Reguardless of price, they replace or fix everything reguardless of how it got damaged at their expense
Can't say that for Nikon or Burris.....

RE: Nikon Burris or Leupold

Take this for what its worth I'm changing all my hunting guns over to Nikon Buckmasters all 12 of them. I don't care what anyone else says I did my own testing and thats what I came up with. All my tests were done with scopes of $300.00 or less. I'm not rich

RE: Nikon Burris or Leupold

Leupold VX-II. You may pay a little more, but it won't let you down. I once bought a Nikon Buskmaster that had to be returned to the manufacture, and it was NIB!

Montana Bob 09-13-2006 08:53 PM

RE: Nikon Burris or Leupold

I own a couple of Leupold VX111 4.5x14 that are attached to 300 and 338 Rums. I went this route because of the recoil factor.
However I went with a Burris 3x9 Fullfield 11 for the 7mm SA ultra and just don't see much of a difference visually looking through them. All gather light about the same and work just fine.
Had I had it to do over again, I would have paid a little less and went with the Burris all around.
My nickels worth.

NIKON... spend the money you saved on some scentlok suit

pnut 08-19-2009 05:13 AM

For a heavy kicking gun like a 7mm, I would at the bare minimum put a Leupold VX-II on it. I only say this because that's what I bought for my 7MM Mag last fall and love it.

+1 I wouldn't get a luppy under VXII but that's just my opinion. I have a Bushnell 3200 on my 270 and it is a great scope, clear, and holds zero.
I also have a Burris on my 300 WBY its clear the BallisticPlex is handy and it has never moved off zero with 100 plus rounds so far.

okgobbler 08-19-2009 07:33 AM

I agree w/ ruger above. FFII or 3200 is better than prostaff or vx-1, but buckmaster or vx-2 is better than FFII or 3200 for about the same money.

In the past 2-3 years I have bought, shot or set up 4 ffII's, 2 prostaffs, a 3200, a weaver grand slam, and an older Vari-x III.

The Leupold, 3200, and 3 of the 4 burris's are outstanding in low light conditions. The prostaffs and grand slam are less than spectacular in the low light. The is leupold is headed to the shop right now because it would not hold a group and has something rattling around in it.

There's only 1 way to do it, & KBacon nailed it!

Be sure to focus each scope for your own eyes before comparing. Also, try going back near dark. Park your car as far away as possible, and place a shot-up target on the windshield. Look at the target through each of the scopes, & see which one shows the bullet holes the best.

And if you still can't see any difference, BUY THE CHEAPEST ONE! They're all good scopes from good mfgrs - you can't go wrong here.

+ 1 for Burris

and here's why !

I've got a Leupold VX-1 and a Burris Fullfield II both in 3x9x40mm. The Burris is far clearer to me. Does way better in low light and seems to hold zero better also. The Leupold has also been sent in for repair 2 times in 2 years of owning it. The Burris I haven't had for even a year. Almost a year but not quite. So I can't comment on how it will hold up but so far I like it a ton better. I wouldn't even think twice about getting the Leupold over the Burris in the furture. I can't comment on the Nikon as I've never used it but I've heard they are great scopes.

Honestly, I like the Tasco's I've used better than the Leupold I have.

The Burris I also got on clearance for $199 with a free Garmin eTrex GPS. So it was hard to pass up for that price.

Doe Dumper 08-20-2009 06:35 PM

I have several Nikons. 3 Pro Staffs and 1 Monarch. I also have a vari-x III loopy. Of the 5 the Nikons go 1-4 and the loopy gets 5th. For the money I dont think you can go wrong with the Pro Staff however everybody has different prefs so I would say go look through all of them. Burris makes nice glass but the customer service in my experience sucks.

Actually out of all my scopes I think I like the old Redfield Tracker the best. Its a tank.

savmako 08-21-2009 09:45 AM

i've gone through this as well, take all three outside if they'll let you, thats what i did, they all looked close in the store, but the nikon seamed much clearer in natural light

whitetailcrazy 08-21-2009 08:12 PM

I have Leupold VX II's and Burris Fullfield II B-Plex's

I used to be a die-hard Leupold guy, that was until I tried Burris,, now i am a believer in Burris scopes... great quality for the price!!!

That's the problem I had of mine not holding a group. That's also the problem the other guy I know with one had. The 3rd guy I know with a Leupold hasn't had a problem but it's on his black powder rifle he just got last year so he hasn't tested it out much.

rab1961 08-22-2009 04:33 AM

BURRIS! Love the ones I have.

eldeguello 08-22-2009 06:01 AM

Leupold, Nikon, & Burris. 1, 2, 3. Nikon customer service is poor.
