300 Win Mag with a 180 grain bullet. Sight in depends on how far you want to shoot. Go to the range and shoot targets at various distances. Don't rely on ballistics tables to figure how far the bullet drops at a given distance because all rifles shoot differently. As far glass, I prefer Burris.

RE: elk hunting rifle ?

There are many good cartridges for elk hunting anything in .270 win. or above would be a good choice as long as you realize the limitations of your choice of cartridge. If you go with a cartridge on the small end, say .270 win. then shot placement, bullet design, and range are more important than if you were to choose a .300 Wby.. Some of the more popular rounds are the 7mm Rem. mag., 30-06, .300 Win. mag., though there are many others to chose from. I reccommend using premium bullets such as Nosler Partitions, Barnes X bullets and I would sight in for 200 yds.. I would also reccommend lots of range time practicing at various distances so that you know for sure what your bullets performance will be and your more confident with it. As for scopes, I would choose Leupold. In optics you really get what you pay for. Hope this helps and good luck.

I use a 300 win. mag and have NEVER felt overgunned! Ive shot 3 with this rifle and have yet to shoot through one! All three were
75 yards or less. I would strongly reccomend one of the premium bullets as well. I was using sierra bullets, but if I ever decide to go back I will be using a barnes X bullet.

I feel that once you get above a .270, the caliber isn't important. Proper bullet chioce, shot placement and confidence in the gun are what counts.

GOOD LUCK!

The smaller calibers will kill elk but I would buy a 7mm mag or 300 win mag bolt action with a scope in the 3 to 9 power range.

7MM REM, 300 WIN ARE VERY POPULAR AND PERFORM WELL. USE PREMIUM BULLETS AND THE REST IS UP TO YOU. MY PERSONAL CHOICE IS TB BEARCLAW IN 300 ULTRA MAG.

300 Win or WBY would be my choice with a good quality scope . I sight mine in for 200 yards with a 180gr bt bullet . It works for me .

I use a 340 Wby. Mag. with a 250gr. Barnes XFB handload. I have killed elk with my 30.06 Sprg. using a 200gr. Barnes XFB handload. A 7mm Mag., 300 Mag., or 8mm Mag are also good elk calibers. Good Luck.

I've taken only one elk so far but I've seen 6 or 7 taken. ALL with 300 Win Mags.I put two 200 gr Grand Slams thru a big 5x5 at about 25 yards.Took out a shoulder with the second shot but the first would have killed him but he didn't realize it yet.Complete pass through with both shots.TN_Hunter,good plan to lose the Sierras, premium bullets do make a difference.
