35 Whelen, 30/06, 280, 7mm mag, using premium bullets for deep penetration would be the ticket.

(With slugs, that 12-ga. would have done well. But for a rifle, why should VT be any different than anyplace else? First choice would be the .30/'06!

In this area of MA. shotgun is the only "long gun" permitted aside from the black powder season and archery.

You can't go wrong with a Handi Rifle in 45-70 or 500 S&W Magnum, under 100 yards these calibers are very destructive
How about a Marlin guide gun in either 45/70 or .450 Marlin. With the Hornady bullets you can easily shoot 200 yards and when they hit they really hit hard.
