What Style Bullet For Deer .300 Win Mag

Hello all. Thanks for looking. I have a question for all of you in the know regarding which factory cartridge and bullet I should use for an upcoming trip to Manitoba for whitetail. After most of a lifetime, I moved up from a .30-06 caliber to a Sauer .300 Win Mag before I went to Manitoba last year. I was told I might expect a 300 yard shot, so I selected Federal 180 grain Nosler AccuBond. They grouped sub-1/2" at 100 yards very nicely for me so I sure couldn't complain about that.

On the last day of my hunt last year I shot a very nice Canadian whitetail. The shot it turned out wasn't anywhere near 300 yards. It was 35 yards which was much more likely anywhere I hunted there. The shot placement had to be just a little high and at the back of the lung because of obstructions that were in the way. I was happy to see hair and blood at the point of impact. However, as I began tracking, there was no blood. Fortunately there was snow and what I could faintly see on the snow was something that looked like atomized spray that was so fine you wouldn't have been able to see it if there hadn't been snow. I expected a massive blood trail. The deer didn't hardly go 60 yards through the thick brush and with the snow it was easy to track his hoof prints, but the point is, no good blood trail even though he was bleeding profusely into the body cavity.

So, for those of you who actually shoot a .300 win mag in the field at deer my question is, what factory cartridge and bullet have you found tobe the best load for you and why? Thanks for you're input!

I'm using 150gr Remington Corelokts in my 300WM. I'm using it on small southern whitetails out to 250yrds. I only got to shoot 1 deer with it last year, but 1 shot to the neck at 225yrds and it was lights out for her. The exit wound was bigger than my fist, so even if she had been able to run, I'm sure there would have been a pretty good blood trail to follow.

I have been using my .300 win mag since 1972. I use mostly handloads with either Hornady or Sierra 165gr boattails. These have been deadly on whitetails to 500 yards even though most of my shots are under 100 yards. My nephews and brother have had great luck shooting 165 gr Rem Core-lots in handloads.

I am going to hunt whitetail with a new savage 300 win mag this year, so I have interest in recommendations. I was going to give 165 Fail Safes a try this coming weekend. Any thoughts on the choice?

I plan on using the 168 gr. Barnes Triple Shock in my .300 Win handloadsthis fall. I know I'd probably be okay with lesser bullets, but I like the accuracy and terminal on game performance I get with the TSX.

I have killed a couple of deer with my 300ultramags while elk hunting.I was using the 180gr ballistic tip and both deer simply dropped at the shot. Both were lungshots.

I would use a NON Premium 180 grain bullet. Premium bullets on deer are often to tough to expand well. Without any doubt if I were to use the 300 Mag on deer, I would use the 180 grain Ballistic tip. I used to use a 700 Remington in 300 Win Mag for deer and I also had good luck with the 180 grain Hornady innerlock. I have gone back to the 308 as a Max deer gun and often use the 250 Savage along with the 6.5x55 and 270.
