Are you Fickle?

OK, I mean how many times has your favorite firearm changed? I have had many guns that really were my favorite at the time but time usually changes the list. Its the same with calibers. Many times I have tried a new caliber and it instantly became my new favorite. I quess guys like me are good for the industry. I quess I will always have a 270 and a 6.5x55. I can't recall not having a 45-70 or a 45 ACP. Most other calibers have come and gone.

I have owned many chamberings but I have been using the 7mmstw since 1990 and the 300ultramag since it became available.I have two customs in each chambering and plan on using them for the rest of my hunting career.

Well good point James. I still see the .45 calibers as what I go to when I want an effective piece. Guess that makes me a fuddy duddy.

RE: Are you Fickle?

My shelf of bullets is dominated by 44 and 45 caliber bullets:D. There are quite a few boxes of .224. I have owned a bunch 0f 222's, 223's. 22 Hornets and 22-250's. I quess I will always have a 223 as well. I have heard that that makes me super cheap.;)

I am sort of fickle I guess. I will always have a 30-06. And some sort of 7mm mag/short mag/stw....

RE: Are you Fickle?

Fickle, no, finicky yes! I've always prefered the .308 Winchester.
I like the 7MM RM, but I'm usually reaching for the .308 when it comes time to go hunting!

RE: Are you Fickle?

I have some friends that can't seem to find their calibers that fit them. Maybe they just like change. I prefer the for sure know it like the back of my hand when it comes to making it as painless as possible. I use only three rifles. 22-250, 300 win ,and the ole underated 270win. Tragectory wise they all are shooting less that 5 inches of drop of eachother at 500yds. Darn took all the guess work out of the shooting. Hmmmmmm.

Velocity = ftlbs beyound 300 yds.

I cant see me never having a 270. Its always been one of my favs...but I'd imagine I will always have a 7-08 and one of those damned swedes also :D

“ Are You Fickle?” At one time yes, all I had was my trusty old 7MM RM but since I’ve joined this board I have to try new calibers and equipment...[8D]

Fickle in thought and temptation...yes! Cash keeps me from owning one of everything! Whenall is thought and said, I have two favourite calibers so far. I love my 6.5x55SE, and I think the .308W is a damned fine caliber. Truth is when I reason things out its hard to imagine a need for anything else...but that darned .280 is soooo tempting.

RE: Are you Fickle?

Guess I've always been a 7mm/.284 fan....owned and loaded for nearly everything in that caliber. The 7-08 is my current love, and although I've used many other cals. for hunting during my lifetime, I always seem to come home to one of the 7's.

Knightia 09-03-2006 09:48 AM

RE: Are you Fickle?

Im not to fickle i dont think( if im understanding the term correctlly:D)

I do tend to go with the more classic /traditional calbers that have been round awileetc & mostly inexpensive types to( andmilsurp+) . Got rid of a 10mm& 223. pistol. But tend to keep what a buy for the most part.
(Frugal/tightwad?);)
Gota save them all for the kids& all the grandkids.

Trailer, Shame on us for corrupting a sane hunter.:D If it ever came to just one, I would have a tough time deciding between the 308, 6.5x55 and 270.

RE: Are you Fickle?

I used to have a .243 every time I went to the woods, about ten years ago I shot a 6.5 swede and that did it for the last 10 years it has been the swede. my safe is full of them. But I still have one .243

James B 09-03-2006 12:08 PM

RE: Are you Fickle?

Most folks who try the 6.5x55 fall in love with it. So effective and yet so shooter friendly. I know that the 260 should be near idenical but its just not the same for some reason. I suppose its just that I have shot so much more with the Swede. Out to 300 yards I have 100000 percent confidence that anything I hit is going down to stay.

James there is also one thing better you buy the old model 96 mauser and re finish them new stock new saftey and bend the bolt, drill and tap that is the fun part and then you have on sweeeeeeet gun.

Hey Rebel, have you been talking to my wife....

RE: Are you Fickle?

Guess I'm "different"...The guns I hunt with the most are like old friends...When I use a shotgun...Its either a 12 gauge double that dad gave me when I was 12 (I'm 51 now)...or either the Browning B-80 that I bought used from my younger brother about 20 years ago...I still use a Remington 552 Speedmaster that I bought when I was 16...Although I did buy a Remington 541-T with a blonde curly maple stock about 10 years ago...

When it comes to deer rifles I'm lucky...I have several fickle friends...Seems they change calibers every 2-3 years...I usually mount their scopes, adjust the trigger and sight them in for them. They even let me clean their deer!!! :D I've just kept my Ruger M-77 in .243 that I bought in 1980, although I did replace the Bushnell Scopechief a few years back and put a Leupold VX-II 3x9x40 on it...

Heck...I've even been married to the same woman for 27 years...Guess I'll keep her... ;)

I have changed guns a lot but the wife was a keeper. Almost 39 years now.:DI imagine that it will last a lot longer yet if I don't trade off her 250 Savage. That might ruffle some serious feathers.;)She is not fickle, the first time she shot the 700 Rem Classic in 250-3000 it was a done deal. She will shoot the 6.5x55 and she didn't mind the 7mm-08.

RE: Are you Fickle?

When i was 9 years old i fell in love with the drillings i saw in my dad's Shooters Bible. I know i was 9, because i still have the book and it's dated 1959. I use to try to talk my dad into buying one, and he always said they were too expensive even though he also liked combination guns....

Those thoughts never left me, and i bought my first drilling in 1983 and i still have it. Nope, i haven't changed my mind, it's still the gun i hunt with the most!

As for cal's, i started out likeing the 30-06 and to this day i still think it's the best cartridge ever invented. But many years ago i found the 7mm's, and i've used a lot of them over the years hunting much of Alaska. I build a custom 7 Express Rem. (280 Rem.) many years ago, and it's still my favorite all around cartridge, but if i had a drilling made today it would be in 7x65R....

For a stopping rifle, i tried many and settled on the .338 and it also has been a good choise, never leaveing me feeling undergunned!

I've found what works for me, and i haven't done much changeing since that's happened so there's no need to change anything now.

The REAL secret is to use theproper bullet weight and constructionfor the game hunted, not the caliber!

RE: Are you Fickle?

Your chices show a lot of common sense DM. I couldn't argue much with that. You are absolutely correct about bullet choice and picking the right bullet for the job. Many calibers will do a lot of jobs with the right bullet. The 280 is the first rifle that I built and will also remain a favorite and very verstile rifle.

RE: Are you Fickle?

I was brough up on a 303 brit hunting from 12-15yrs old. It was a non sporter. But as I got older, my dad would let me use his 742 remmy 30-06 when he wasnt hunting. I fell in love! When I turned about 18, I used a remmy sportsman 78 in 30-06 that I borrowed from my boss. Done this for 2 yrs in a row then filally bought a 7mm short mag. It's a sendero SF. I love it, hunted with it for 2 yrs, still have it. This year I have went back to my roots. I bought a new medallion in ole 30-06! Cant wait to hunt it this year. Now it's my woods gun and the 7mm is my field stalking gun. Now I want a 22-250, varmint gun
a 25-06
a 45-70 lever. Then who knows...:D

Well, I killed my first deer with a Winchester 32 special, that my grandfather gave me...it's been the gun I've used ever since. I purchased a Browning A-bolt 300 win. that I might have to take out this year (it's my back up gun).

James B 09-05-2006 08:14 PM

RE: Are you Fickle?

I had a 32 Special as well. I took several deer with it. I just sold it a couple years ago.

RE: Are you Fickle?

Not me. I have 1 deer rifle...my trusty old .280 Mountain Rifle. I bought it new in 1987, and haven't used anything since. I shoot handloads with Hornady 139's, and it is deadly.I shot a 1.5" group at 300yds several years ago with it. It's better than I am, no doubt. I am 100% confident all the time with that gun, it feels like an extention of my arms. Leupold 3x9 as well. Great set up IMO.

That's why I'm leaning towards getting one for my son, but in .260.
The .260 is the first gun that has really had me "itching" for one. I do alot of bowhunting now though, so that is why I probably haven't gotten one yet. My son will be 9 this fall, so he's ready and I guess the .260 will fill both of our needs!! :D

RE: Are you Fickle?

James B- I love the Win. 32 special and it's a heck of a shooter. It's a great brush gun and in Eastern KY, you rarely have a shot that's not in the brush. I do wish that it was a little more popular, that way I could get a little better selection of ammo.

DANTHEHUNTER 09-06-2006 07:41 AM

RE: Are you Fickle?

I am fickle about my ammo but my rifles seem to grow on me. When I first got my Ruger M-77 MKII target in a .220 swift I thought I made a mistake but it is my favorite rifle to shoot and to load for.I choose it for its legendary past. Everyone was saying it will burn out your barrel ,then I started thinking about the 22-250, .223 wssm, why dont they burn out there barrels ? So I stopped worrying and started shooting. Now I am really getting to like my Browning A-Bolt .270wsm I to have always had a .270 of some kind in my safe.

James B 09-06-2006 09:40 AM

RE: Are you Fickle?

The 220 Swift is one of the very few rifles that I have never owned. I started varmiting with the 222 and have owned several 223 and 22-250 rifles. Now I am back to just the 223 for varmits.

James B 09-07-2006 04:32 PM

RE: Are you Fickle?

On another site the old favorite deer caliber came up. After thinking it over and reading the responses here, I would have a near impossible time deciding between the 308, 6.5x55 and the 270. These three calibers have accounted for probably 80 percent of the deer that I have taken over the years. The 6.5 followed closely by the 308 and trailing a bit would be the 270.

retrieverman 09-07-2006 04:45 PM

RE: Are you Fickle?

Is this like a support group or something? Hi, my name is Jeff, and I am "firearm fickle". I am fickle especially when it come to deer cartridges. My current favorite 3 are 300 wsm, 270, and 30/30 (not necessarily in that order), but I also go through spells where all I shoot is my muzzleloader at deer. I have a 308 and 375 H&H that I like as well, but I have never taken either in the woods. I believe that it is the objective of every firearms manufacture to make us fickle. That is how they sell new guns and calibers.
