What barrel twist is it?

Hello, I have been searching to find out what the barrel twist is on a Winchester model 670 carbine, chambered in a 30.06. Can anyone tell me, I have been searching all over the net with no luck.

Thanks in advance
Shane

Hi, Instead of starting a new thread,I thought I would piggy back onto this one. I have a Weatherby Accumark in 7mm STW. I am trying to find a load that it likes, but I don't know the twist rate. Any ideas?

The barrel is 26" stainless, fluted...I think its a Krieger Criterion.

Thanks

If you can't get the info on twist rate from the factory, do this:
Put a tight fitting patch on your cleaning rod. Preferably a rod with ball bearing handle so it will follow the lands and grooves freely. Start the rod into the rifling. Make a mark on the rod about a foot before entering the receiver if pushing from the breech. Measure the distance the rod moves until the mark on the rod rotates 360 degrees. If it makes one complete rotation after the rod moves 10 inches, your twist is 1/10.

It is eithera 1 in 9-1/2" or 1 in 10" twist.I believe that it is actually 1 in 10" but it really makes little difference which it is as far as loads are concerned. My own two 7mm stws have a 1 in 10" twist and they prefer 140gr loadsusing imr 7828,or h-1000.With 160gr bullets r-25 provides a little more velocity. As for the barrel, the criterion barrel is a button rifled barrel manufactured by a company owned by kreiger,it is not thewell knownkreiger cut rifled barrel.

Thanks for the help. Ranger's idea with the cleaning rod was a good one...why didn't I think of that!

Stubblejumper, I lovethe STW (as you seem to), and although the Criterion is not a real Krieger cut barrel, it has been pretty good for me. It doesn't pick up much copper fouling. Are your STW's customs or do you have a factory rifle?

Both are built on trued and lapped, stainless 700 actions, with sako extractors installed. The barrels are 26" one by schneider and the other a kreiger. The stocks are mcmillan and both are pillar bedded. Both have 3x10x42 swarovski scopes mounted.

Sounds like some pretty sweet rifles. Someday I will be able to set myself up with some nice custom pieces.
