? for 300 WSM shooters

I need to get shells for my new rifle and need opinions on what to get I'm thinking of Federal 180 Nosler partitions or 180 Fusions be used for deer and elk

Both would be excellent choices. The Partition has a very good track record but I am impressed with the Fusion ammo as well. I have tried in in three calibers with very, very good results.

In a large and powerful cartridge such as the 300 wsm, either bullet will be fine. I'm more of a fan for the partitions for big and tough game like elk though.

You would be in great shape with a 150gr nosler accubond. Great penetration and expansion with high velocity rounds. Or 150gr swift sciroccos, though the accuracy of the accubonds are hard to beat in most rifles.

I've had a Win M70 .300WSM for 4 years now ... I've only used it on southern whitetails and have had my best accuracy with the 150gr Winchester Supreme Ballistic Tip. It shoots 'em right at an inch at 100yds and every deer I've ever shot with 'em has dropped like you hit it with a sledgehammer, at ranges from 15 yds to 350 yds. My best advice would be to try various loads and see what your rifle likes the best. Good luck!

T-bird,

On average how many exit wounds do you get, and at what ranges?

I have to agree with T-bird. I have never had a deer take a step using 150 Supreme BT's. To answer your exit question, all mine have expanded andexited perfectly. Of course, when they hit the ground on impact, it really doesn't matter to me. I have been using 300 WSM for 4 years and killed 15 deer and hogs. For elk, the 180's would probably be better, but for whitetails, 180 seems overkill.

As a side note, I do not advocate Supreme ballistic tips in under 150 grs. My Dad lost a deer last season, and my brother almost did using 130 BT's in their 270's. They expanded too quickly and did not exit.

I had ask about the exits because I feel the ballistic tip is closer to a varmit bullet than a hunting bullet.

I have had no problems with NBTs on deer but wouldn't suggest them as all purpose load for the likes of elk. I have had very few non exits with the NBT on our canadian whitetails or mulies and even those that didn't were DRT.

To the question I have no experience with Fusion ammo, sorry. The NP or Accubond would be a fine choice, both have worked well for deer through moose IME.

Good Luck

I have killed 9 elk with 180gr ballistic tips out of my 300ultramags.Several were complete pass throughs with the last one penetrating both front shoulders before stopping against the hide.I have also killed another 20+ deer, bighorn ,and pronghorn using the 140gr ballistic tip out of my 7mmstws.The majority did exit. Not one of these animals covered 50 yards after being hit with a ballistic tip,and most dropped on the spot or within a step or two.
