Help me choose .308 vs. 3006

Well I sold my beater truck so I have the money for the new rifle I want. It will be for sure the tikka T3 lite stainless but need to choose either 3006 or the 308, I hear they are very close but the 06 will go a little further. I have a tikka t3 in 300 wsm and its too much recoil, soI was thinking either the 06 or 270 but was sugessted the 308 as it has noticably less recoil then the 06 which im going for. Im pretty sure itll be the 308 but if there is hardly a differnce in recoilI might just get the 06.
soooooo what do you say?? sorry if its a repeating question.

On paper the .308 will shoot more accurate at further distances. But your talking 1000meters, on paper!
If you are going to hunt with these either one will do just fine. I'm partial to the .308 but that's just me.

The 308win will produce less recoil and slightly less velocity.

I'd vote for the 308. I had an '06 once and it was absolutely brutal in the recoil department. My 338, 7mm, 308 have far less felt recoil than my '06 did. Maybe it was a gun that just didn't fit me, either way it turned me away from it.

i would go with the 3006, IMO the recoil is not that much different than the 308, both guns have a wide range of load options. 3006 IMO shoots flatter and has a bit more knock down power........but hey that is only 1 persons opinion.
I have a savage 3006 and it shoots great and doesn't kick back either.

Are you trying to start a 40 page thread????

I was at the same place as youonly 1year ago. I had picked out the kind of rifle I wanted, & was trying to pick a caliber. I was trying to balance what I was hunting (an elk this Fall), with what calibers I already owned (.243 Win), with energy/range (somewhat of a wash between .308 & '06), with the kind of rifle/rifle action I was looking at (little difference between them in a bolt), with bullet choices (too many for either!) and with recoil (again, a virtual wash, but I'm a real p*ssy when it comes to kick!).

I borrowed a buddy's 700 BDL in '06 & shot a box ofWinchester Silver Tips through it. I determined that it wasn't too bad, so I went ahead & bought the 700 CDL that I had my eye on. I had wanted to try a .308 at the same time (as well as a .300 Mag & 7MM Mag...), but the opportunity didn't present itself. So, I determined that the '06 was "good enough" for me, & I went my merry way.

My point? You can't make a bad choice between these 2 calibers. But, you can agonize way too long over the choice! If there's any way to shoot (or at least handle) your chosen rifle in each of these 2 calibers side-by-side, pick the one that "speaks to you". If you can't do this, then just pick one! Neither caliber is going away any time soon, and ammo will be reasonably priced and ubiquitous.

Then, GET THEE TO THE RANGE, and start practicing! A well-placed shot from either cartridge is bad news for most any critter at a judicious distance.

(FWIW,the R3 (Limbsaver's private label for Remington) recoil pad on my CDL made that gun much more tolerable to shoot than the plastic one on my buddy's BDL. I shot them side-by-side last month, & there was an unbelieveable difference: my buddy's on his way to the 'smith to have his BDL upgraded. When I heard you mention a distate for recoil, & an affinity for a T3 Lite, I felt compelled to go into the recoil pad rant.)

.308 – If anyone can notice the difference in performance between the two while hunting please let me know. Not sure if Tikka makes a true short action receiver but if they do you will have a slightly lighter rifle with a little shorter bolt stroke, advantages in a hunting rifle.

I prefer the .308.

Being that you already have a .30 cal with your 300WSM, you don't really need either the 308 or the '06. IMO, I would stick with your first options of the .270 and '06 and opt for the .270. With 130 gr bullets the .270 is hard to beat as a deer cartridge. I know I will get beat up for this but I am personnally not a big fan of the .308. I've had 2 of them and although accurate on paper but without going into detail, did not give me a warm fuzzy on game. (deer and black bear)
If I were you, I would go with the .270 or '06.

Id take a long hard look at a 7mm08. It will do everything a 308 will do, with a little less recoil. And like someone already said, you already have a 300wsm, there isnt much difference between that and a 30-06
