Default 270

What does everybody think of the 270. I bought a 270 savage model 110. The plan is deer hunting with shots ranging from maybe 50 to about 100 yards. The ammo of choice is Winchester power point. Should i shoot the 130grain or the 150.

You're set, try the 140gr nosler accubond on deer. Very accurate and expand and penetrate well without coming apart.

i shot a small bull Elk with a 150gr rem core-lock outta my 270.
dropped him in his tracks (frontal chest/spine hit)

buy my rifle groups better with 130's

the 140's might be just the ticket. never tried em in mine but i got faith in em.

it's a great cartridge. i done some comparisons with my -06 (the 270's a flat shootin buzer)

I think its an exellentcartridge!! And in my own opinion if your just using the 270 for deer nothing much bigger, the 130's are the way to go!! Might i add a selection of bullets, try thefederalfusions there great deer bullets!! IF you plan on future hunts with elk i would reccomend the winchester failsafe in the 140 grain.
But if you like the winchester power points stick with them just to add my grandfather back in 1965 (yeah that long ago) as he said he dropped a 6x6 elk with a 270 130gr power point and put him down with one shot in the heart and the bull didn't move one step.. For some hard to belive but plenty of witness to back it up( My unlces and aunts)... Amazing and itscomsiders a aduquete elk rifle... thats all i rest my case!

Given what you say you are going to use it for, I believe you will find it to be a quite good andconsistent performer on that size of game.

alot of people that havent tried the nosler accubond 140's will still swear by a 130. But the 140's will shoot flatter than the 130's and hit as hard as a 30-06. And even give less meat damage believe it or not. The 140 was the best thing that ever happened to the 270 IMO.

I have hunted with a .270 for 25 years and I can tell you it is a great Deer round I have put alot of venison in my freezer. So to your question I would use the 150 grain given your range you guoted. The power points always did the job for me, when you are young and dont have alot of money you shoot what you can afford .All the fancy stuff seemed like it was for rich poeple. The winchester super X 150 grain sp seen alot of bang -- drop.
Good luck and you will like that calibur and rifle.

The 270 is plenty of gun for all NA game with the possible exception of the big bears, which it has also taken many times. The 130 grain bullet is more than enough for the biggest deer. The 130 grain has the same SD. as the 165 grain 30 caliber bullet. With 150 grain bullets, it will deliver 2800-2900 lb ME and a velocity of 2850- 2900 fps. Many folks doubt its ability to cleanly take elk and moose but the truth is that any hunter with any degree of hunting skill will have no problem with the 270. I have read a lot about the 270 in Africa as well. A girl I reload for has taken many Plains animals with her 270. I have hunted with the 270 for 30 years and no animal fairly hit was ever lost. Any game that can be taken with the 30-06 can be cleanly taken with the 270 and 280 as well. Last year I took nine Mule deer with nine shots with the 270 and 130 grain Federal Fusion loads. A typical performance for the 270.

Yes it is more than enough for your scenario. IMO the .270 is more of a AT&T "Reach out and touch someone" Rifle. Out to 300yds is where it shines. But again, if it's what you have, then it will work great. I'd just rather carry a .30-30 for those distances....
