.308 Win Barrel Length for AR

What is a good length for the .308?? I am going to be building a flattop AR for deer, varmint, target shooting. I am thinking about either a 20" or 22".

I have an Armalite AR-10 carbine (16" barrel) and love it. I have been reading on AR15.com, and there doesn't seem to be THAT MUCH difference in barrel length. If you are shooting 300-500 yards, there will be more difference, but I won't shoot at any game over 150-200 yards so... I have only shot my AR out to 100 yards so far, but it is EXTREMELY accurate at that range (even using cheap ammo). If I wanted to shoot long range, I would go with a 24" bull barrel like the ones on the AR-10T that Armalite makes. DPMS also make a heavy barrel AR-10 that is very good quality (I would have boughta DPMSbut found my Armalite used at a good price).

Well I'm kinda stuck now, the dealer I was going to go through just told me that they can't find any lowers to build for me. Since I live in California I can't buy one out of state and then convert it to CA legal. So hopefully I can find one before they put another ban on them.

What exactly is a Kalifornie lower? As I said, I have been reading on AR15.com and have heard of them, but I have never actually heard the differences. I have just bought another Armalite AR-10 out of Arizona that looks a little different (from the pictures that the seller sent me) from the one that I already have. It may be a Kalifornia lower. I bought this "new"gun for the upper,so the lower will be for sale.

Well there are two different types. One has the spot where the mag goes closed off, and you load it from the top with stripper clips. It is machined so it cannot accept mags at all. Type in Fab 10 to yahoo and thats what that one is.

The second I just found out about. It uses a regular lower, but the magizine is bolted it with either a oin or bolt and nut. So then when I take it out of state, I could just take the bolt out and use it like a regular AR. It is the only loophole us Californians could find, but we know that they will make a law banning them soon.

But keep me posted on your lower, I will find out from the shop doing the install of the bolts about getting one from out of state.

I found the legal stuff on Kalifornie. Here is a link from AR15.com.

I thought IL was bad with no CCW permits, but to not be able to own an AR with detachable mags would make me sick...and make me leave. [:'(]
