I agree 100% with stubble.
Ammo twice as high and probably not as available.
200 fps increase at the most.
You should get into handloading, it's simple and will pay for itself, you will find it fun and it will open that 25-06 up alot. You would be right with the whetherby.
Doing what you're wanting to do will be a whole lot of trouble for nothing. I say spend the money on some good loading equipment.

I'm actually going the other way. I have a Weatherby Mark V in .257 Wby that while a great gun, I'm tired of buying ammo for it (don't reload). I'm looking for a nice high-end .25-06 to replace it with (Sako, Kimber, Sauer, etc).

Clatton. You won't be disappointed, I made the same move and in the field, I can't see one bit of difference in terminal performance. Most of the 25 caliber bullets are built more for the velocity of the 257 Roberts and 25-06 anyway. I have much hunting expierence with the 250 Savage, 257 Roberts and 25-06. On deer they all work very well.

I guess one question you should also ask yourself is why do I need an extra 200 fps over what a 25-06 can do? Its a pretty fast stepping and flat shooting round as it is. Those that own them seem to praise them greatly for deer sized game. If you are taking shots inside 300 yds ( which is longer than probably 75% of normal deer shots ) the extra expense and muzzle blast would basically give you nothing. On the other hand a 25-06 should be a peach to shoot with little recoil. I would stick to the 25-06 and use the extra money to upgrade your scope to a VXIII or Conquest.

Well I have spoke to Roskoe several times about the 25-06 ai....sweet round. I think the 06ai and the 257 weatherby would be very close. However it would require handloading. The 2506is a very impressive cartridge and ammo is cheapand plentiful.

Twice the money for ammo and twice the punishment on the shoulder. I sold a 257 wby it does have a noticeable kick more than my 300win.

When I was younger I was always trying to get more out of a round than I could and so is the rest of the world. That's why the ultra mags are here today bigger and better they say. You don't need all that, one well placed shot is better than a hundred ultramags.

They only way I would say the 257wby would be any better would be less drop. Less hold and less guess work in the field. But with today's equipment aka rangefinders and knowledge of ballistic's with a lot of practice you might become a animal sniper.

Just chuck it all and go with the 257 STW if you are looking for speed. the 2506 will do anything you want it to do if you set it up right.
With the STW you will get the 3500 - 3700 FPS with the same bullet.
