New Varmint Rifle
Wanting to purchase a new Varmint rifle for long range varmint shooting at the local club. Looking for suggestions on Manufacturer, model, barrel length, and also what caliber. This is my first adventure with Varmint rifles, so any help or advise would be a great help. I want to stay with a factory rifle, and I do reload.....

I don't have any firsthand experience, but great things have been said about savage. Check their website and you can see what they have for varmint guns.

I just got a 204, but wished I would have stayed with 22-250. I also put it together in an encore, and for a varmit gun wished I would have just went with a bolt.
I myself would consider a savage heavy barrel if I had it to do over. |

I don't think you could go wrong with a Ruger, Savage, Remington, Browning, Tikka, etc.
We need to know a budget in order to better help you out. How much do you want or willing to spend on the rifle, scope, etc. What kind of Varmints will you be shooting? |

The 243 Win. or 6 MM Rem. should work well for your application but the 243 would be a better choice if you do not reload...

Would like to stay around $500 for the rifle. I already have a Super Snipper scope I plan to use.

The Savage with the accutrigger as previously mentioned would be a good choice but I’m not sure what they sell for in the states... www.savagearms.com

I seen used varmit guns sell for 1100$ + at the gun dealers...And this was with a cheap scope mounted on it....I don't think you could get a new heavy barrel gun for under 1000$... I won my 6mm in a raffel and it's worth over 1500$

goodness gracious smokeman, what kinda guns where they???? I bought a tack drivin 223 for 300 dollars. I outfitted a encore for under 400. You can get a savage for under 600 dollars.

How about an AR15?
Stop laughing!! I just read an article in "Shooting Times" about the fantastic accuracy of modified AR15 rifles. There is a pic of a 2.85 in. group shot with one in .209 Ruger at 600 yards. And another of a 5 in. group at 500 yards with one in .223. They don't look like varmint guns but as they say in the shire "handsome is as handsome does". Robin down under |

I think those are what we call bench rest guns for benchrest long range comp. I rarely see anyone go out on a groundhog shoot and pack a 20+ lb gun.

Check out the remington 700 Varmint rifles. they are just awesome. I like savage for hunting but I dont consider then the best for varmint rigs. The remington has the best receiver made IMO for rebarreling. Most all customs are built on 700 frames. The remington VSSF II has a HS precision graphite composite stock and 26in stainless fluted bull barrel. It's a real looker and will drive nails. The browning A-Bolt M-1000 is an awesome barmint rifle too, but is a little more expensive and the receivers arent as strong IMO. The remington is the best for the money in varmint calibers. They make the VSSF II, the VS, the VLS, and maybe a few more. they all look and shoot like a dream. They're right in there with the savage in price. The savages are about to lose their"best bang for the buck" ststus IMO. They're going up in price because everybody's buying them where they're so cheap. I'll admit they're just as good in a hunting rifle as some others, but they lack in the varmint dept.

If you were refering to my post on the AR15s as being 20 lb. bench rest guns, that is not the case. These are basic AR15 US military rifles that have had some modifications. Some have had a heavy barrel with a different twist rare added. New triggers and Good scopes and mounts. Robin down under |

I have a 700vssf myself in 22-250.It averaged around.800" but after accurizing it now averages .600" for five shots.With some more load development,itcould possiblydo sub 1/2" but I have several pounds of leftover powder to use up,and it is the only suitable rifle to burn that powder.My personal favorite varmint rifle however is the tikka t-3 varmint.

I have been eyeing the savage low profile in 22/250,but haven't made up my mind yet.Have a rem sps in 22/250 and it has shot less than inch groups at 300 yds and one holers at 100.This is a good light carry around rifle.
A friend wanted me to shoot his tikka varmit in 308 and believe me that thing shot well,I shot four groups of three in a row and all four groups were one holers at 100 yds.Got an eye on that one too,would like to hear from anyone haveing one of the tikka varmits in 22/250. below is how the 22/250 spsshoots out of the box only adhusted the trigger.   |

i have a T3 varmint in 22/250. it shoots great - 1/2 MOA in suitable conditions ( using 40 grain sierra's and 50 grain hornady's) with hand loads. it's not over-the-top heavy either, so a day lugging it around is not a killer on the shoulder. i don't hesitate to recommend them. the new version comes with an adjustable cheek piece now, too.

If I were to go out to buy a long range varmint rifle today, I think I would get one in 220 Swift. There aren't many rifles made in that caliber, however, so gun selction is limited. I know Remington makes one, but I'm not sure who else.
If you do get a Remington, the trigger pull will be set way to heavy, but the trigger is easy to adjust. If you aren't comfortable adjusting it yourself, most gunsmiths will do it at a fairly reasonable cost. |

Get yourself a Savage Heavy/Bull barrel of any caliber and you won't be disappointed. That and your Super Sniper, you'll have a great gun. I have two Savage 12FV's in .223 and 22-250 and I love them both. Getting a SS20x here soon, but can't make up my mind as to which gun I am going to stick it on.

Savage model 12 is way under $1000 and a great shooter, at least in 22-250 from personal experience.

My first choice would be a savage varmint gun, 26 heavy barrel wood stock and of course the best varmint caliber 22-250. Now scope wise would be a different matter tasco has a good scope thats under 150 dollars for benchrest and varmint shooting its a high power and clarity scope which would do u real good. Now lastly you would need a good bi pod id suggest harris or shooters ridge id go for the shortest bi pod they make. i have a shooters ridge but its just to darn tall for me laying down and too short sitting down so the lower the better for laying down wich is mostly what you would be doing varmint hunting anyway.

I went with the New England handi rifle in 22 Hornet. It is a tack driver.
I had a Ruger but started to have too many problems with it. |

I like the feel of the ruger target better than the savage, and remarkably priced the same, maybe cheaper. Theyre very nice rifles and are chambered in alot of good caliber.
