New Rifle
 

Just bought a Remington 700 243 from Wall-Mart. Has simmons scope already mounted and they say it is already boresighted. What are the best steps (other than shooting it) to take from here to get this gun in top shooting condition?

There is a breaking in process for the barrel that alot of people use but i'm not sure of the steps. I've never used this method i just sight in my scope and start shooting. You may want to post this topic under the gun forum and i'm sure you'll get more responses.

Clean the barrel to make sure it is free of oil, then shoot it.

Guns arrive at the store with an excess of oil and lubricant. This is not for shooting purposes, it is in case the guns sit on the shelf for months at a time. Wipe the excess oil off of the outside of the gun and then clean the bore with dry pads. Run the pads through until they come out clean. If the gun is boresighted, it will save you on ammunition. If you are deer hunting at average distances, 100-250 yards, sight the gun in to be 1 inch high at 100 yards.

Not sure which Simmons scope it is, but if it is similar to the Simmons I had the first thing I would do is get another scope.

Definatley get a new scope, no question. The only way to get comfortable with the gun is to shoot it. Also for that caliber, I recommend the 100 grain bullet for deer and antelope. Also a good predator load.

Execelent gun the 700,the scope is another story! Clean it good then clean it some more,then take it to the range and sight it in S-L-O-W,keep the barrel cool...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

First off like others said clean it inside and out. Start at 25 yards, since boresighting is usually done for 25 yards. Adjust so your POI (Point of Impact) is about 1/2&quot; low of bull, dead centre. Shot 2 shot groups before making adjustments, if you have a flier in on the 2 shots shoot a 3rd. Less chance to chance the bull around. Like said allow cooling time. Then move to 100 I would personally sight it in to your shooting distances. If 200 is the norm that 1 and 1/2 high at 100. If 100-150 is max than 1&quot; high at 100. If 100 is the norm zero at 100. When you have it sighted in, take it home and clean it again, inside and out. Then head back to the range to make sure it is where you want it to be for hunting. On final sight in I shoot 1 five shot group and don't touch my bore for hunting season. Unless it is required, such as rain or dirt. I clean my exterior and lub often during season. Once season is over I clean the gun completely. I use wire brush, then a patch with bore cleaner, run dry patches till clean, then place a light oiled patch (remoil or the likes), lubricate and pack it away. Put a tag on it to run a patch througfh the bore before shooting, until you get the hang or if you have several guns.
