RE: 7 mag vs. 7 ultra mag

Short mags are here to stay, like it or not. Can't say the same for the super shorts. The 7mm 300, 325, 270, all these are going to stick around
The 270wsm,300wsm and 325 wsmwill likelysurvive although sales have been very slow for the 7mmwsm.On the other hand, remington has already dropped the saum cartridges and is now chambering the wsms.

I never figured out why the 7mm has'nt caught on as good as the others. I know the reason that saums are falling off is because they would'nt let no one else chamber them because they thought they were really on to something. Then the wsm came out and they immediatly sold rights to other companies. All those sales put the saum on the back burner. They're equal cartridges, though the wsm shows slightly higher velocity, which I think was a marketing play, since you cant get more out of one than the other handloading. I might sell my saum sometime and get a 270wsm. I think i'd like one, maybe a 300 wsm.

Me neither.I think it is because too many people have read O'Connors stories about the 270win.The reality is that the 270 is larger than necessary for deer, and the 7mms offer a better bullet selection for larger game.

For most hunting, the 7MM RM would be plenty of gun. So for me, I like the 7MM RM!

RE: 7 mag vs. 7 ultra mag

At the last moment before introduction, it was discovered that there is a safety issue if someone were to forceably chamber a 7 WSM cartridge in a 270 WSM rifle. So, the 7 WSM was redesigned with its shoulder location moved .037" forward. This last-minute change caused confusion. 7 WSM ammo, rifles, and correct reloading dies were slow to reach market - trailing the 270 WSM which had been announced simultaneously www.shortmags.org

I have a 7 wsm i think it will be around for awhile, hope so anyway. I dont know about the wssm's though, it's hard to keep a cartridge around when only one rifle company chambers them. I would like to get a 25 wssm in browning varmint, but im alittle worried about it staying around. I wish they could have made the 257 wsm, i'd have gottenone in a heart beat.

I wish they could have made the 257 wsm,
I think that it could have been very successful. It would have offered 257wby ballistics, without having to buy overpriced weatherby guns and ammunition.

When you look at ballistics and velocity, stuff like that, the 270wsm looks like a great rifle. I might seel my 7mm saum and try one out.:D

I really like my .270wsm ,loaded with some barnes stx 150 grain they do a great job. I am looking into a 7mmstw I was wondering if any one has one and if so how do ya like it? It just seems to be real close to the 7mmum.

Dan, well, STW will be about maybe 200fps faster than a remmag, and RUM about 100fps faster.

I get 3100fps with 160gr accubond out of my STW. I am not pushing it near like wildcatters used to do.
