RE: .22 Advice For My 9 Year Old

My vote and recomendation for a 9 y.o. is a Savage Favorite (or the older model, Savage/Stevens Favorite).
Single shot, can be very accurate, light weight. I still use mine today after having it for 25 years. I'll use it before half of the others I have when wanting to take a.22 rimfire.

The ONLY problem is finding one that isn't overpriced. Retail is around $240 new, and most used ones aren't that much less since they are hard to find because it seems like nobody ever wants to sell them. (says how good and handy they can be) But you MAY be able to pick one up for half that if you look long and hard.

I'll have to agree with the Marlin that Reb suggested (although, I'm getting tired of agreeing with him :D).

He'll definately have fun with it. Especially since they look like "old west" guns.

If you don't want a lever gun, I'd go with a savage bolt gun. I just think a kid needs to learn on a lever or bolt gun before he goes to semi-auto. I don't know why, maybe cuz that's how I learned.

Also, you're right. If he's right eye dom., you need to make him learn to shoot right handed. He's young and new to the sport, so he'll adapt just fine.

Henry makes a fine, accurate .22 lever action that is less expensive than the Marlin, which also is a fine gun. It is grooved for .22 scope mounts. As far as sights, I'd start him out shooting with the iron sights until he becomes proficient at it. This will give him some good experience on how to shoot without a scope. You can get a decent scope later. He will then understand both protocols. As far as the dominant eye, keep checking this.
