UN meeting on Gun ban
According to the NRA, the United Nations was to meet over the 4th of July in an effort to establish a treaty banning private ownership of firearms. Today is July 7th, and I've heard no news. Is the meeting still going on? Did it ever occur? What's happening in this regard? No black helicopters over my place yet....nobody been pounding on my door so far telling me to surrender my "weapons" yet.................

RE: UN meeting on Gun ban
More than likely the UNs meetings were about North Korea and their missile launching.

RE: UN meeting on Gun ban
no, pawildman is correct. the Bush admin was standing firm as of yesterday when this was all suppose to be done. but i have heard and seen no news as of yet. By late last night they were supposed to either drop it, or schedule more meetings for 2008 (in hopes they get a democrat anti-gunner) in office.

RE: UN meeting on Gun ban
This BS started out several years back, and the current meeting was supposedly held to "assess the progress" of efforts to reduce traffic in "military-type weapons". Who knows what is covered by that phrase? probably even the M1911 .45 auto! So far, the Bush admin has established the position that this country will not be a party to any treaties that would further restrict Americans' 2nd Amendment rights, or adversely affect ourBill of Rights in any other way.
And, FWIW, Kofe Annan says "Gee whiz, Mr. Bush, that's not what we want to do, anyway!" I believe him (NOT!!) |
RE: UN meeting on Gun ban
Asfar as my gun rights go, I'm just downright scared about the intentions of our liberal-minded legislators in this country, let alone what some whacko foreign government thinks they are going to tell us what we can and cannot do along these lines. "MY cold, dead fingers................"

ORIGINAL: Pawildman Asfar as my gun rights go, I'm just downright scared about the intentions of our liberal-minded legislators in this country, let alone what some whacko foreign government thinks they are going to tell us what we can and cannot do along these lines. "MY cold, dead fingers................" U.N. Small Arms Conference Fails ![]() U.S. STANDS FIRM, REJECTS FUTURE MEETINGS . . . Over the past five years, the world has spent well over $100 million on numerous United Nations Small Arms and Light Weapons Programme of Action-related meetings. Though some view these international meetings as a route toward backdoor global gun control, no one can argue there has been little bang for the buck. The United States clearly said enough is enough, and objected to wasting hundreds of millions more dollars on an ongoing bureaucratic debate. The U.N. Small Arms Review Conference concluded Friday with nations failing to agree, a major setback for anti-gun organizations and welcome news for supporters of the Second Amendment. The U.S. rejected any future meetings and clearly showed that, while it supports worthwhile efforts at curbing illicit small arms trade, it will not support ineffective regulations negatively affecting its freedoms. "There are tragedies around the world on scales that demand international action," said Rick Patterson, managing director of the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute (SAAMI), which represented the firearms industry at the conference. "Had the conference maintained a focus on fully automatic military weapons they may have been able to implement an effective global strategy. Issues related to sporting firearms and private ownership are too complex for global strategies." Read news reports about the conference from the Associated Press and Canadian press as well as scholar and author John R. Lott Jr. Daily roundups from the conference are also available from the U.N. |
RE: UN meeting on Gun ban
The NRA set up a website that was going to happen at the UN.
http://www.stopungunban.org/ In addition, the NRA-ILA had daily posts on their website as for the progress of the UN meetings, or the lack thereof. One note, the UN observes July 4th Holiday and the building was closed that day. http://www.nraila.org/CurrentLegislation/Read.aspx?ID=2283 The UN had its own website devoted to the Small Arms ban going on. I have checked the Report of the meeting link, and in my opinion, nothing was published, probably because the whole thing was a waste of time and money and nothing was accomplished, except preserving our rights. http://www.un.org/events/smallarms2006/ |

Eldequello & derekt28........Thanks for the update. Lets me take another knot out of my shorts........I just didn't see how that mess could possibly come to fruition, but stranger things have happened. Thank God for people with intelligence and the NRA. Keep vigilant......
