I still have one 6.5x55. Its a rebarreled 700 Remington. Its always good to have a few spare rifles. The 7MM-08 and 270 are great and verstile calibers. Its time for me to thin out the number of calibers that I reload for. Gets to hard to keep up with having so many different bullets and brass and dies. Need to make life more simple.:D

RE: 6.5x55.....

HI-JACK WARNING!!!!

I've been smitten by the 6.5mm cartridges for a while
now and when/if the time comes I can add to the safe
the 6.5x55 and the 260rem will be front runners.
Could those with hands on experience help with some
distinctions, as in pros vs cons? These are some I've
been led to believe:
6.5x55-
pro's; beenchambered alot longer in many rifles
For hand loaders can be made somewhat "hotter"

con's; factory ammo on the "light" side due to old rifles in use

260rem-
pro's; factory ammo loaded closer to max pressures (?)
hand loaders can use other 308 based cases for reload

con's; not chambered in many rifles
factory ammo not widely available/expensive.

No doubt my limited knowledge shows thru here.
So the question is, which would be the best bet
for a non-reloading factory rifle type like myself?

Thanks and sorry again for the hi-jack.
Ignore me if you need to;)

RE: 6.5x55.....

Yep used both and reloaded both and in my view the 260rem has the edge with bullets 120gr and under and with a longer magazine and more case to play with the 6.5X55 is top’s with the 140-160gr pills.
I make my 260rem cases from 243win brass, as there is no need to trim the cases after resizing. If you want a lightweight mountain rifle like my model 7 then get a 260rem but if it is standard length that you have in mind then the 6.5X55 just squeezes in front.

I have a European caliber I found in Germany that I have grown to like, 7 x65R. Worked up a reload before I came to Iraq and will be using it when I get home if I don't tag any during bow season! I love it, with the reloads get 5 in a quarter circle. Time to see what it will do on deer here in states.
