marlin 44 mag question

My wife and I just purchased a marlin lever 44 mag, My wife felt very comfortable shooting the 44-40 but the 44 mag has alot more recoil, My question is will the 44 special rounds have alot less recoil than the mag shells? I see on the barrel that it will accept both rounds. Thanks!

RE: marlin 44 mag question

There are four variations of the standard Model 1894 centerfire rifles. These are the 1894PG (.44 Rem. Mag./.44 Spec.), 1894FG (.41 Rem. Mag.), 1894SS (.44 Rem. Mag/.44 Spec.), and 1894C (.357 Mag./.38 Spec.).
Yes the 44 special will have less.

thanks guys,

I just stoped by a Gander Mtn store to purchase some 44 specials and not only did they not have any for sale but the guy working the counter claims there is not much difference between the 2. I figured he was just trying to sell some magnum ammo...

If you handload, you can load .44 mags down to a .44 spcl level. You may also be able to find some factory .44 mags that are loaded down a bit. When I had a .44 mag carbine, I found American Eagle 240 grainers weren't too bad, but the Winchesters had a bit of bite to them.

last night I bought 2 different 44 special rounds,

44 special Hornady cowboy loads, Will these have alot less recoil than a 44 mag?

Also bought a box of supermax 44 specials, How will these be?

RE: marlin 44 mag question

Cowboy loads will invariable have less recoil than other stuff as the velocity is less than 1000 f/s.

I shot 44 spec and 44 mag in my Smith 44 - 629 revolver. 44 specials are nice to shoot. 44 mags are mean. I hand load and shot mostly 240 gr bullets, lead and jacketed HPs.

I normally load my 44 mags to almost the max.

Most 44 mags travel less than 1000fps standard.. 44 mag rifles are not big on recoil.. I honestly find it hard to believe she cant stand the recoil... Has she ever shot a 243?

did you look into the 35rem lever action?
