small low power scope

small low power scope
I just bought the gun (against many opinions) that will be used for most of my deer hunting. Its a Rem 7600 in .308 topped withthe 2x7 Elite off another gun.
I've ranted before about how I'm always carrying the wrong gun for the situation, so I looked to split the difference between a heavy low scoped bolt .308 and an iron sighted model 94 30-30.
I've got the see-thru rings so I can use both sights and scope, but the scope is long and heavy, what are my options for a good quality, compact and light, low power scope?
Maybe a 1x4.
Thanks in advance

I was in the same boat as you not too long ago. A 'long' scope on my 1895 guide gun. I ran across a Simmons Deerfield 4X scope on Ebay and got it for something like $20. Its nice and short and clear and looks more in porportion to the rifle.

I would go with a fixed power 4x. Leupold makes the new FX series 4x32. Also Sightron's Sii 4x32 is a great bargain at around 200 bucks. Fixed powers are brighter, tougher, more waterproof and lighter than variables. Just make sure you get one that is Fully Multicoated as opposed to just Fully Coated or Multi coated

The 2 X 7 Elite doesn't sound like too bad of a scope for a .308 deer rifle. I would definitely get rid of the see through mounts, though. Bad cheek weld for fast shots and not particularly solid either. Get some good quality (Leupold) mounts with the scope mounted low and remove the open sights if necessary. Carry them in a zip lock bag with a small screwdriver for backup if you must. A fixed 4X would also be good. But the 2X7 Bushnell Elite is a pretty nice scope and could be cranked up if a long shot presented itself.

Thanks guys, I like the idea of a fixed 4x.
Roskoe, the 2x7 will go back on my stainless bolt Tikka in.308,mounted nice and low, as soon as I find a small scope for the new rifle.
I needed a different set-up for the area I'm hunting, so now I have a gun for close fast deer, another for far away still deer, and a compromise gunfor when I don't know what to expect, thats why the see-thru mounts on the 7600.
Cheers

me too. I'd probably go with a Leupold 4X-Compact. And throw that see-thru mount as far as youi can! Those things put your eye way too far below the cener of the scope, and are also very flimsy and easy to knock out of alignment! The scope is your PRIMARY, not an auxiliary, sight system.
If you really think you need quick access to the irons, use a swing-over mount or a QD type that returns to zero when you put it back on....

Leupold also makes a 2x7x32 that is a compact scope and is lite weight. Cabelas also has a Alaska Guide in 2x7x32 which also is a good scope. I put this one on a 450 Marlin NEF. It has kept it's zero. Thismule does have some kick to her. Yes I would shed that see through mount also. Zeak
