Scoping old Swedish Mauser (Base ??)
 

I need help. I have a Swedish Mauser and I would like to scope it. I have Weaver rings and now I need to get a base. Do I need to get a Weaver base? If not, anyone have any other good reccomendations?? Thanks,

You can't do it so you better sale it to me I will buy it!!
lepould sale the bases and the mounts the mounts cost $24.00 and you will need a set of ext high rings so the bolt clears the scope a set of ring cost about $30.00. that is if you drill and tap it they make a mount that fits on the rear site and you will need a long eye releaf scope to use them. if it were me I would drill and tap it I have 6 of these guns and once you shoot it that will be the only gun you will like. Considering what rings cost, I would go with Leopold base. Much better looking the Weaver style, IMO.

I also suggest not cutting on a straight military rifle, drill and tap only on a rifle that is already cutup.

As a direct answer to your question, no, you don't need Weaver brand bases. Many other companies make a base to accept the "Weaver Style" scope rings. Nothing wrong with Weaver bases, they're just not the most attractive, sleekest, most "state of the art", or most costly alternative out there. In theory, they aren't the strongest, but I have mounted them on customer's rifles in all the factory calibers you could have imagined twenty years ago, without a single failure.
If I'mcorrect that you have either an M96 or M38 (military/government produced) Mauser action, then you will need a Weaver #55 base for the rear bridge, and a #46 for the front. The one-piece base is a #402, but it makes access to the loading port (feed ramp & magazine area) a bit more crowded and less accessible. I'm not in the trade anymore, but I still have a few #46 bases sitting around, if you send me a couple postage stamps. If you're interested, send me an e-mail. Otherwise, Burris, Millett, etc. all publish the conversion charts and listings so you can find the right sized bases in their brand name.
I'm assuming, of course, that your rifle is already drilled and tapped for scope bases. If not, there aren't curruently any "no-gunsmithing" mounts available that I know of. If so, these bases provide the correct balance of elevation between the front & rear rings so that your scope is aligned with the bore, and the hole spacing is correct so as not to interfere with anything.
