Handi-Rifle
 

Anyone shot the handi-rifle from New England firearms. How accurate are they and are they reasonably priced, thinking about getting one for a youngster.

I don't and have never owned one. I like them and have seen several shoot. My son is only 6months so this is a little premature but that is the rifle I am buying him in .243win. Light recoil,safe and the first thing I would do is either replaceor work on the trigger. From what I have seen they are great shooter, the ones I saw were out of the box and all shot under 1.75"(at 100yds) with $100 scopes. I would get the H&R version myself. Have you seen lots on the used market? When I worked at a major outdoor outfitter selling hunting equip. I sold maybe 50 in a year and I never had any complaints and never saw one on the used rack.

We have 3 of them. 1 New England in .223 and 2 H&R's in .270. They are an excellent cheap rifle. They are very accurate, reliable and did I say cheap. If you like single shots then they are a great bargain.

For the price you can't beat them. We have a little .223, and .243 and thy both shoot great. The only problem we ever had with them is everyonce in awhile the shell will get stuck and you have to push it out. Though that normally only happens with hot handloads.

good gun.....what you see is what you get...and they work quite well.

I have one in .243 and took a doe last year with it at 160 yards. It will do sub-moa with my handloads. I too have had the problem of a shell getting stuck in the chamber, but it hasnt happened since It has gotten broke in. The problemshould go away after about 300 to 400 rounds through it. I reccomend them! EJ

Greybeards has a forum dedicated to them and I think the the shell getting stuck is an issue with the .243 for some reason. I seems to be the caliber that you hear most of the problems with this happening.

I own a H&R Ultra Slug gun and couldn't be happier with it. Great gun for the money. I would not hesitate to get a centerfire version.

Another plus is you can have other barrels fitted to them so you can use more than one caliber or use a shotgun barrel all with the same reciever. Much like the encores, except the barrel has to be fitted.

Many years ago started the at the time 12 year old son out on one in 30-30. For the money a really good choice, the firing pin broke after a couple of years but other than that a good starter gun

Although some of them in all calibers will work pretrty well, Its really best to stay with the low pressure cartridges. This would include the 223. 22 Hornet, 44 Mag, 357 Mag. 30-30 and 45-70. All of the rimmed cartridges work very well. I have had the 30-06 and 280 as well. No problem with them. I had a 243 and you guessed it, STUCK CASES. Many buy the 44 Mag ans 357 mag and have the chambers reamed to 445 Super Mag and 357 Maximum. My 45-70's shoot real well. I also have the 44 Mag and 357 Mag. For next to nothing, you can add extra barrels. You can also buy youth models or just the youth Butt stock. I have had ywo 223's and both of them shot great. I would stay away from the 22-250 and 243. Thiese would also be pretty good if they have the mechanicl extractor.

I have the .243 bull barrel it is a very good shooter. I am going to get the .50 s&w next ,just have to try it !!!
