accurasy vs. hot beral
Hi,can somone tell me if the rifle accurasy is realy going to drop whenever the beral sterts to get hot?
thanks toons Safty,Safty & Safty |
RE: accurasy vs. hot beral
It depends on the gun. You might find that accuracy gets better with a warm barrel, but your point of impact will shift. Plus the hotter the barrel gets, the quicker it's wearing out. Barrels don't actually "wear" out, they "burn" out.

RE: accurasy vs. hot beral
My REM 700 in 7MM Mag gets hot real quick. I have to let it cool for 10 minutes between groups.

RE: accurasy vs. hot beral
I have yet to see a gun get better groups with a hot barrel than one that is cool. If you are testing reloads or really serious about your groups, try to keep everything consistent. The barrel of the gun, the fouling in the barrel, the temp, etc, etc. When really serious about it, I will wait 10 minutes between shots. When hunting, your usually shooting that critical shot from a cold bore. I talk to snipers for MD, tell me they go to the range sometimes every day and shoot one shot from their cold bore to ensure cold bore accuracy.

BigCountry, I didn't mean a HOT barrel, but a warm one. I have saw some rifles shoot better with a warm barrel. Just as some shot better with fouled barrels.

my mauser groups open up and shift after about 3 rounds fired consecutively...

RE: accurasy vs. hot beral
Thin barrels really lose accuracy when they get hot.

RE: accurasy vs. hot beral
Toons, a very easy way to cool a barrel down is to place a damp dish rag or towel over the barrel between groups. It cools the barrel down quite fast. One of the worst things you can do to a barrel is let it overheat.
