My uncle just gave me a Remington 722 in a 222. Can anyone tell me any history on it?

The 721 and 722 were the first "modern" Remington bolt action rifles that werer not based on amilitary design. They were designed , ifI remember correctly, by a gentleman named Mike Walker in the late 40s/early 50s. There are some that claim the 721 and 722 saved Remington from bankruptcy. They lost money on the other centerfire rifles they made, and had a very tough time competeing with Winchester and Savage.

The 722 is the short action.....I have a Remington 721 in 300 H&H......and it's a superb shooting and functioning rifle. The 722 in 222 is famous for accuracy....it's a very fine gun and should be looked after.

The stocks were not well designed for scope use and the later model 700 took care of that.

IMO that rifle is somewhat of a collectors piece.

I agree. I have one in 257 Roberts. The stock cracked on it many years ago.

That 222 caliber is a fine shooter. I really dont understand what advantage to the 223 has over it with the exception the military adopted the 223. Isnt the 222 a better round? I shot a 721 in 270 caliber and it like every other 270 I have ever shot was a fine shooter.

The gun looks to be in great shape, however my uncle tells me it has not been fired for 20 years plus.
How would I find out what year it was made?

Historically the .222 Remington has had a rep for inherent accuracy. I fired one for many years. The .223 has a little more zip and it is not unusual for a military cartridge to catch on with civilians. So the triple deuce lags in sales and available rifles. I would not bother trading in a 222 for 223.
