Debating.....
this is the first time ive ever posted in the gun forun i usually use the bowhunting, but i figured this would be a better place for my question. I am debating a new deer rifle and between these three which one would u choose.also if u could would u tell me some pros and cons.OKay which one .270......308.......or the 7mm rem mag

RE: Debating.....
7 Mag...An excellent deer cartridge. I have one that's a Weatherby Vanguard. Drops deer like lightning. Recoils more than the others. Shoots very flat. Ammo costs more than the others. Very loud. Ammo available almost everywhere.
30-06...Also an excellent deer cartridge. I have a Ruger 30-06. This too drops deer on the spot. Recoil is noticeable, but not severe. Flat trajectory out to 300 yds. Ammo is relatively inexpensive, and available everywhere. 270...I don't have one of these, but have seen them in action, first hand, on several occasions. Like the 7 Mag, is very loud. Has the flattest trajectory of the group. Drops deer on contact. Ammo is also relatively inexpensive and can be found everywhere. Great deer cartridge. 308..I have a BLR in 308 that is my favorite deer rifle. Drops deer like a ton of bricks with less recoil and noise than the others. Very flat out to 300 yds. Ammo is cheapest and found everywhere. Bottom line on performance is: Deer will never know the difference, and inside of 300 yds. you never will either. Personally, I prefer the 308, but it is by no means any better than the others. Go after the best deal, best fitting rifle, and best looking rifle. Good Luck |
RE: Debating.....
Very, well said, good advise.
If you have buddies that have some of these calibers, see if you can get them to let you shoot them. then decide!! 308 very good caliber. |
RE: Debating.....
I would choose the 7mm Rem. Mag. Good luck.
|
RE: Debating.....
My vote would be for the 7mm Rem Mag. I actually have hadall 3 of the calibers you mentioned, and while all killed deer in their tracks 90% of the time, the 7mm just felt better to me. My only complaint about my 7mm Rem mag is its 26" tube thats on it, other than that, it is a very flat/accurate rifle with less recoil than my 30-06 but it does have more muzzle flip. I have seen the impact on everything I have shot with it, as it is a very easy gun to shoot, and the muzzle flip is very easily fixed with the proper hold on the firearm.

RE: Debating.....
i have a .270 and it is one of the best guns i have ever shot. very accurate.
|
RE: Debating.....
There is no better deer rifle on this planet than the 270. It has it all when it comes to deer hunting. Available Ammo, acceptable recoil, Instant kills. Shoots Flat, Shoots fast. Load it with 130 grain Federal Fusion ammo and you will be on the top of the heap. I also have a 308 Browning A-Bolt. Great deer rifle. I have owned five 7 MM Mags. Just way more than I ever found use for while deer hunting. Recoil and Muzzle blast is not worth it to ME. Like someone said, if you can, shoot all three before you decide. Good Luck.

RE: Debating.....
thanks guys i am leaning toward the .270, it seems to be the most accurate, see ive also got a .308, its semi auto which is alright but the thing is too damn heavy thats why im in the market.I believe is a remington model 740 woodsmater if anyone has one.I just like the .270 better,my step dad has a 7mm rem mag and ive shot it and it just doesnt impress me.Its barrel is just too long for its own good.yes it shoots fast hard and accurate but where i hunt i doubt im going to have a shot over 150.Heck I might even get a 30-30 just because its light,an excellent brush gun but the only thing i dont like is the fact it doesnt have alot of stopping power.I think ill get the 270 does anyone know a good one thats fairly inexpensive and still gets the job done

RE: Debating.....
The Remington 700 SPS, The Savage with Accu-Trigger. The Vanguards and Tikkas. The SPS would be my first choice.

RE: Debating.....
anywhere online i can look at these guns i would also like to know prices,i want something thats going to be fairly inexpensive
|
RE: Debating.....
You can use gunbroker.com for pics, and a general idea of what you'll pay
For new guns, it's hard to beat prices at walmart.com You should seriously look at a 7mm-08 also. It's just as lethal as the others inside of 300 yds on deer, will have the least recoil, shoots really flat, and is generally matched with fairly short barrels (as is the 308). good luck |
RE: Debating.....
my step dad was talking about the 7mm-08 so your saying the guns at walmart are actually good and worth buying
|
RE: Debating.....
The .270 winchester is very close to the finest deer rifle ever made.....
It's a tad too much IMO but still a very fine cartridge. |
RE: Debating.....
I would look at Savage for lower cost and something that works. Funny I almost never see a used .270.
|
RE: Debating.....
ahh i dont think i want a savage. but i do have a question why are the guns at walmart cheaper than the ones on the makers website
|
RE: Debating.....
Dont let anyone talk you into the notion that Wally guns are built cheaper...just tisnt true. They sell so cheapbecause ofmassive volume. Remember also...the prices on the company websites are msrp's.....just suggested retail prices. Almost everyone sells for cheaper than the msrp.
On your original question. I carried a 270 for nearly 10 years and have zero complaints. Hits hard, groups great, cheap and readily available ammo, same poi with any brand of 130 grain I have ever tried. Its just a time tested tool that is a solid and dependable performer which you would never regret buying. I bought a 7-08 in 2004 and I can say I like it every bit as well as the 270. The 2 rounds are VERY similar ballistically with the 08 having a tad less recoil. I always considered my 08 as a short action 270. You cant go wrong with either round. The 7-08 has caught on rapidly over the last few years and I expect it will continue as theres really no cons to it. As for the 270...its been putting them down since 1925 and is as popular as ever. Flip a coin and take your pick...either is ideal. |
RE: Debating.....
DD. Boy!! I though maybe you fell off the edge of the earth.:D

RE: Debating.....
I am a anti-270 hunter. For meits either too big or too small to be the perfect gun.
But it shots the best - reloads the best and isvery accurate. I don't own one but I have "borrowed" my son-in-laws and it is in my gun safe now. |
RE: Debating.....
If you find the perfect ONE rifle, I don't want to hear about it. However, My wife might.;). The 270 is probably the best pure deer rifle on the planet. Thats is for any size deer under most all shooting and hunting conditions. The only thing that might be better would be the 280. Even then its to close to call the difference. Very close would be the 250, 25-06 260, 6.5x55, 7mm-08, 7x57 Mauser ,308, and 30-06. Don't forget the 44 Mag and 45-70.;)

RE: Debating.....
I agree with you James, I have had a .270 since I was 16 .It has killed atleast 20 deer none seemed to notice it wasnt a mag. I am a big bore fan by heart so that .44 mag and 45/70 are really my cup of tea. But I am 6'3" and weight 250 lbs an ex bodybuilder so I love recoil I never have minded some pain, My military career I was a ranger and I got to be around and shoot many .50 bmg.So that is where that comes from.

RE: Debating.....
ORIGINAL: Cougars09 anywhere online i can look at these guns i would also like to know prices,i want something thats going to be fairly inexpensive Also, I wouldn't just discount the Savage. You can usually pick up a new one for around $400. Same type of stock as the 700, though. With the new accu trigger, they are probably the most accurate low priced rifle out of the box. They've got a good rep for durability also. Weatherby makes an awsome .270 also. Little pricey and heavy, but great gun. I would not limit yourself to one caliber or brand. Variety is the spice of life! Buy 'em all! |
RE: Debating.....
Yep James I may as well find it and jump over it..lol. I figured some weeks would be 7 days but not every week...sheeesh. 7-12's gotta love it..lol...only in coal country. On the bright side a small chunk of northern WV gonna be mine pretty soon ;):D
